I got as far as the third sentence where the author said "Halfway decent hotel rooms start at $300 per night — and that’s without WiFi and a morning croissant"? HALF WAY DECENT starts at 300€?!?! I stopped reading here as it was obvious the writer had no clue what they were talking about in regards to Paris and thus had no credibility. The author and I are obviously living in quite different worlds.

Well we pay more than that in Paris - but we stay in definitely upscale places. There are "decent" places available for much less.
And how could any author not notice the issue between the government and people renting out apartments illegally?

I wanted to comment but Washington post's link to confirm my subscription doesn't work - they probably don't want to have someone from Belgium signing up ;-)
You pay for Wifi in most hotels 4 or 5*. All hotels under 4* give Wifi for free.
So the guy cameto write on coming to Paris on a budget and booked a 5* hotel. Moron.

I was going to say the author had to be an idiot with expensive tastes. Then I saw it was about a family of four. That does make a difference in hotel costs, compared to a solo traveller.
It is possible to find "halfway decent hotel rooms" at under 300 dollars/night, even for a family of four. The hotel I stayed in on my trip in 2013 was certainly "halfway decent" and has free WiFi, can't say if they had croissants since I did not eat breakfast. I took a quick look to see if the prices had gone up, they had, but not that much. But maybe they don't want to split up into two separate double rooms.
An apartment gives more room to spread out, but also brings some problems. Like what nytraveler said about illegal rentals.
Some of the other advice in the article is good, some of it is silly and a few things are wrong.

Bruce is clueless :
A. 300 USD per night means a 4-5 stars, not exactly a budget hotel.
B. Paying Wifi : you encoutner this ONLY in 4 or 5* hotels - ALL OTHER hotels give it for free.
C. Airbnb or any apartment : there is a new law making 90% or more of apartment renting ILLEGAL.
Bruce should read the new ALLUR (or ALUR) law instead of enticing readers of the WP to break the law.
Ps : I spend 50 nights per year in Paris, speak French, read the laws...
I have slept in 150 different hotels from B&B to 5 stars, and have paid on average 110 € per night. Usually in 3 stars hotels. Complete with A/C that I never use, being a good European.
Bruce : get your facts right or ... ask before writing !!! You just get it all wrong.

I'm a cynic. Tourists are going to continue to flock to Paris. Any newspaper articles that keep them in the tourist ghetto of central Paris and thus away from my hood are welcome. Bruce's article just repeats and reinforces all the previous gibberish written for consumers of the bucket list approach to travel.
This being September when all the various laws enforcing the new short term rental stipulations were/are to be put into practice, we'll soon see the committment of the Powers That Be.
