Will our Luggage fit in this rental car?

O.K. - so I admit up front I'm not a good judge of size of cars. Right now have reserved a Peugot 307 "or similar" car. Plan on having two 26" suitcases. Website says 1 large and 3 small will fit, but doesn't given any dimensions of large and small.

I'm sure somebody out there is better at this than I am! Will they fit?

What website are you looking at? I always rent from AutoEurope and they give detailed descriptions, pix, and dimensions for every car. Even if you're not renting from them you could check www.autoeurope.com and probably find what you're looking for.

Hi Patandhank:

I just reserved the Peugot 407 through AutoEurope by phone and Erica @ 888 223 5555 booked me for 5 days in Spain @ $336.28 USD out the door (without the insurance)

It is a little bigger car but I would think the 2 suitcases should fir in the 307 too.

When your website says one large and three small suitcases does that mean in addition to four passengers , or just two?

Any way give them a call they should be able to answer your questions. Good luck.

The 307 should fit two suitcases.

On this webiste you can see the exact dimensions for the 307 on page 9 (the hatchbackversion): http://www.peugeot.co.uk/ppp/PPPWEBU...ical/307he.pdf

They are: lenght (between the wheels) 104 cm (a little more than 3 feet), depth (from back to seats) 90 cm (a little less than 3 feet.) The height is not stated, but is similair to the height of the back-chairs; I'd say 100-125 cm (3 to 4 feet). This is with the back-shel in place (the boot/trunk is than hidden from outside-eyes). Without the rear-shelf the height is similar to the height of the car (up to 5 feet or so).

Similar cars are; Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus (hatcback), Opel (or Vauxhal) Astra. They all have equal boot/trunk-size.

The renault Megane is alkso a similar car. Trunk size here is 13 cubic feet.

These kinds of cars are the most sold cars in Europe. A regular family of 4 in Europe probably has a car like this!

I hate to tell you this, but you will have a difficult time trying to fit two 26" suitcases into the trunk of a Peugeot 307 or similar size car. Two regulation carry-on size bags might be a better choice.

Each time I have hired a car I have explained to the Car Hire company what we and our luggage consisted of. Two adults, 2 large suitcases and two small suitcases for example. They have always come up with a recommendation each time that has worked.

Hi Patandhank.

The problem is rarely the volume but the shape of the trunk. For example, you have probably noticed how the rear wheels of cars tend to protrude into the trunk. Life gets much simpler if you have at most only 1 26" bag (or smaller) and arrange the rest of your stuff into 2 smaller bags.

My standard advice is to find a friend with a car of roughly similar dimension, and try it out beforehand.

Of course, if there are only two or three of you you can always use the rear seat area.

We just returned from France having rented a Renault Clio (size of a 407). We would have been hard pressed to fit 2 large cases in it, although 1 was fine. It is going to depend on the shape of the boot- I wouldn't risk it in the 307.

A Renault Clio is about the size of the Peugeot 207. The 307 is larger, and the 407 larger again, being about the size of a Volkswagen Passat. A 307 is about the size of a Volkswagen Golf, which would appear to be the same as a VW Rabbit.

I think the advice to take one large and two small cases is probably the best.

I defer to chartley on Pug sizing, but we draw the same conclusion. Upsize car or downsize bags. The Clio was snug for 2 adults and a kid, but, there were plenty of times I wished I had something even smaller. Especially at the pump, but, even so by my crude calculations we averaged just under 50mpg on diesel (at a 20% discount to gas). Ask for a diesel.

HI P,

We rented a 307 on our last visit to France. Great car.

We were able to put 1 26" suitcase and 2 22" carryons in the rear.

The camera bag and my wife's tote went on the back seat.

I don't think that you will be able to put 2 x 26" suitcases in the trunk.

Yikes good thing you asked (Sorry if I misspoke) I just now checked the autoeurope site & saw the 307 there is actually a "wagon" type.
I also have two large cases & was told the 407 we reserved would work since there are only 2 of us. Perhaps you should take the larger model?

Thanks everybody. Original plan was to take 1 22" bag and 1 26" bag. May have to go back to that plan if we decide not to rent a bigger car in France.

I'm a regular Hertz renter.

I have a rental in May for 2 weeks on a Peugeot 407 (with GPS in English!) for 500 euros. Pickup at MRS drop off at CDG.

You can go to their web site and they will show you what each car holds, including the 307, plus a picture of the car. Just use the same times as you booked for whereever you're arriving, and they will show you pictures and capacity for everything the rent, up to a Mercedes convertible.

I'm getting the 407 because it's the smallest car with a real trunk. Traveling around, I don't want any breakins. I've requested ahead for a diesal, because of petrol costs.

Here's an active web site on daily prices for both by country.

We used to own a VW Golf (2001) and rented one in Germany last summer.

1-26" suitcase would fit fine, but we had to put the suitcase in sideways - not wheels in, handle out, but rotated 90 degrees. I don't think 2 suitcases that size would have fit just because of the dimensions, but 1 suitcase plus other things fit fine. The space inside the trunk is pretty good, but 2 large suitcases is a stretch.

On our trip last summer, we had 2-22" suitcases, a dufflebag, and 2 day packs, plus a few odds and ends we picked up along the way. It all fit into the trunk pretty easily.

So I say - take smaller bags or get a larger car.

According to the latest Auto-France booklet, the leasing agency of Peugeot, the 307 Executive will hold 1 29" suitcase, 2 25" suitaces and 1 19" suitcase in the trunk. I imagine that it would then hold just 2 26" suitcases.

One thing you might think about is amount of stuff you pack. We went for 2 weeks to France and England and schlepped large and small suitcase (for me) train stations, etc. What a pain. When I got back, I did an experiment. I took everything out of the suitcases and then repacked only things I REALLY wore/used. It all fit into my smaller roll-on. I will never travel with loads of luggage again!

I haven't really read all the replies, but the first question I had--WHY are you taking those two huge things. Just a thought, and if you answered it, I'll accept it. No matter if you have a car, etc., hotel rooms are smaller than we are used to. PARE down--or take ONE bag. My thinking

The better question is why are you (we) responding to a question from 2007?
