Which Is The Best City In Europe To Visit In January?
Hello,

I realize that January may not be prime time to visit Europe weather wise, so I am wondering which city people suggest as having the better weather that time of year.

We are not in to skiing, but like strolling,(as best we can in a cold month) history, museums, and of course great food and wine.

We realize that wherever we go in Europe that time of year, we'll have to wear a coat, but would prefer to not be freezing at the end of the day, if possible.

Thanks for any advice!

Spain, Spain, Spain.

Barcelona (Sitges and Casteldefels) is perfect for you.

Madrid (Toledo) may be a second choice or complementary to Barcelona on the same trip - depending upon the amount of time you have.

Spain is like California - San Diego to Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Would not consider anywhere else (other than perhaps Southern Italy/Sicily) bearing in mind that I like economically wealthy countries (which precludes Israel, Greece, Egypt etc.)

If you aren't necessarily for warm, just don't want to be absolutely freezing, you might consider London. Almost every day there is over 32F/0C. Much of what there is to do in London is inside, so you will keep fairly warm. And it meets all the rest of your criteria, especially the history and museums. Don't let anybody fool you, the food is great too.

I was in Edinburgh this past January and found it to be enchanting. The streets were empty of tourists. And I never had a problem getting into museums or any tourist attractions. In fact, I went up to the Castle on a Sunday morning and was only up there with 3 other visitors for the first 1 hour that it was open - it was like having the place to myself. And at the Holyroad Palace, there was only one other gentleman on the tour with me. No lines in restaurants and no need to make advanced reservations for any tours.

It was chilly, but definitely not that cold. I live in Southern California, so I'm not used to cold weather and I was perfectly comfortable out wandering around all day.

The Highlands had snow capped hills which was lovely.

The only negative was that it gets dark so early that time of year.

I was also in Ireland in January and foudn the weather to be cold, but not too bad. Believe it or not, on a two week vacation to Scotland and Ireland, I didn't feel a drop of rain.

While January may not be the ideal month to travel (I love to travel in October), I think the positives outweigh the negatives. You can put up with a little cold weather for the cheaper flights, hotels and no lines.
