I stayed at the miramare and it was a great experience. It is well-reviewed on this site and tripadvisor.com. Great views, super host/hostess, and easy access to everthing in town. It was far better in person than what can be shown on the website.
Is it too late ??? Probably not, of course, it depends on the calendar period that you are staying. Also certain special rooms or suites may be booked by now.
Most of these hotels have very liberal cancellation policies. My advice is to book something definite now that you can live with. When the rest open in March, you can see what's availavble and cancel your original reservation if you can/want to.
Positano is magical. If the images from the websites excite you, then donot change your mind.

The Poseidon is one of my favorite hotels. Because of its perch above town,( it's a 10 minute walk into town, but you do need to be physically fit to get back and forth) the views from some of the rooms and the restaurant terrace are spectacular. To say nothing of the food at the restaurant, which is some of the best I've had in Italy.
The staff was superb, the jr. suite was lovely. Two negatives: The swimming pool is the size of a large bathtub, and some of the standard rooms are quite small.

We stayed in Villa La Tartana last summer and loved it and the location (steps from the beach and next to the domed church you see in photos). We had two rooms, a double (for my son and my sister-in-law) and a suite. The suite was two full rooms, and was huge. The bathroom was small, but perfectly appointed. From the living room, we had a view of the sea. The double had a small balcony overlooking the passageway below and a large, long bathroom. The staff was very attentive and friendly, and we were close to everything. We loved this hotel. The only downside, and I think this is true of most of the hotels, is the lack of elevator. The staff had no problem bringing our bags up to our rooms up the slender, but marble staircase.

Message: I agree with Surfergirl,my wife and I stayed at Villa La Tartana in late September, and it was great. The room had a great view of the sea and was very clean and comfortable. For the price(150 Euros/night) you cannot beat it. We found that the location near the church and beach was great!!!
