Which airport for Provence - Avignon, Marseille or Paris?
We will be going to Provence in May, and staying in Aix, St. Remy and Gordes - @ 3 nights each.

We most likely will fly into or out of Marseille for the start or end of our trip and tie that to Aix since it doesn't look far.

For St. Remy/Gordes, though, I was thinking Avignon might be more convenient. The price difference is not muc - $877 for Avignon, $733 for Marseille. Some people have suggested flying into Paris, and taking train to Avignon. To me, the time spent does not seem worth it, when we can fly right into Avignon. The flight to Paris is $702 (all from Boston) and then adding the train ticket it will be close to Avignon price.

I'd like to know if anyone has used Avignon airport. Another suggestions from someone - Nice - is just too out of the way for where we are going.

If anyone has other ideas, please let me know. Thx.

I don't know your exact dates - - but on www.orbitz.com right now, I'm seeing $583 (plus $5 service charge) for May 7-21 to Paris and back. It's a webfare, so you might not find it on other websites - - perhaps check www.aa.com as well. They also have Boston-Marseille for only $651 (NOT a webfare).

This may be a function of what days in the week you are traveling. These are Tueday to Tuesday (which you can't do, with 9 nights there). But experiment around a bit (if you can) - - flying sat to Sat in May will cost several $100 (USD) more.

Might be worth your while to check your exact dates on Orbitz.com - - cheaper than on www.travelocity.com right now, just using this one example.

Best wishes,

Rex
You have to switch airports to fly into Avignon... so you'd have to go from CDG to Orly - that will take you at least an hour. Wait for the flight, board and hope there aren't any delays. The planes are all small, as is the airport there. In 3 hours you can be in Avignon on the TGV direct from CDG, without all the hassle.

Otherwise I would opt for flying into Marseille Marignane - easy airport to get in and out of - rental cars are right across the access road from the terminal and it's a short drive to the highway which will take you straight north to St. Remy or Gordes.

PB

I totally second PB's suggestion: direct TGV fron CDG station. Go to www.voyages-sncf.com, click on the British flag, and you'll have the exact schedule for the CDG-Avignon trains (there are several a day). Plus, the train ticket is flexible, so if for any reason your plane is late, you'll just take the next train. Alternatively, you can also take a train from CDG to the new TGV station at Aix, which gives you more options.

I read PBProvence's post about needing to change from Charles DeGaulle to Orly. Changing airports might not be necessary if you take British Air and change in Gatwick. I know you can fly from Gatwick to Marseille or Montpellier but I don't know about the other towns.

I have flown to Marseille by using British Air through Gatwick. The change of planes is very easy as you wait in a central lounge. Gatwick is much easier than Heathrow. I would not advise going through Heathrow as you might have a very long walk when you change planes.
