Where would you go in Europe in October?
We have just rethought our original plans to spend a week on the Amalfi Coast in mid October after several friends suggested that we might want to postpone a coastal sun and sea trip until May or June 2007.
We're already psyched for traveling in October and are wondering where any of you fellow travel fanatics would choose to go - the only countries we're eliminating, for various reasons, are France and Austria. Otherwise, anything would be up for grabs.

you might try the black forest - from baden baden (spa and casino) thru the various little towns to Lake Constance. Should be beautiful that time of year. Spain might also be an option - Barcelona could keep you occupied for a week with no problem.

We went to the Amalfi coast in Nov 2003 and found it great! No crowds,no rain, etc/ We did not have one day of poor weather! I realize we may have hit an off year, but it was pretty perfect. You might want to rethink that...try posting with a question regarding the May/ June crowds there...I think May is very popular with Europeans...Hopefully, someone can shed light definitively on this for you..

Turkey, Denmark, I'd second the motion for Spain (especially Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla).
If you want to venture a little further afield than Europe (but not too much), how about Morocco, possibly with a stopover in Paris, London or Madrid? We went to Morocco for our honeymoon in 2005 and loved it.

I'd guess that October might be fine for anyplace in Europe except Scandinavia and northern Germany where you'd have better than even chance of it being quite cold. We were debating between Barcelona and Istanbul for late Oct. early Nov. and finally decided on the latter.
If you want quite warm, I'd suggest Menton, south of Spain--especially Seville, Greek Isles. Enjoy.

Thanks everybody. After posting last night, I did a little research on Fodors and started thinking about Barcelona/Sevilla, Morocco and other parts of Italy - Lake Como, Sicily. My head is spinning at this point (this should be the worst dilemma I'll ever have in my life), especially after reading wondering's post. It made a lot of sense. The friends we saw last night had been to the Amalfi Coast in June and felt that it lent itself more to warm weather, bathing suits, beaches/immersion in water and even to some of the festivity coming with more people around.
I'm continuing to debate and will keep checking my posting.

We are going the Amalfi coast in October and specifically chose that month so I am curious why you are having a change of heart. Unless you are specifically going there to swim in the ocean (I cannot imagine why one would go to Italy for that when the beaches and water leave a lot to be desired), I think it will be a great month to go. Weather should be pleasant, and less crowds

I remember Ireland in October as being especially magical, we were there the last 10 days of the month.
The weather was perfect, like New England in the fall, cool and crisp air that made you want to wander the hillsides. Though the roses were still in bloom in Kilkenny.
I still dream of returning to Ireland in October.

I was debating back and forth this morning and went back to my original plans. Seeing the postings from wondering and mulifat helped to convince me that going to the Amalfi Coast in October wasn't such a bad idea after all. It isn't that I LOVE crowds but the thought of being in a resort like setting without some action and bustling was a bit unsettling. So ... after mulling it over, I'm back to figuring out where we're going to stay.
Again, thanks to all.
P.S. For any of you who stayed in Positano at any time during the year, any suggestions would be welcome.

Just got a reply from the Albergo Miramare. They can only take us for 2 out of 4 nights. Is it worth staying there and trying to find ANOTHER hotel for the next 2 nights? I did email them back just now and asked for their recommendation.
What do you all think?

For me, probably not (and I loved Miramare) just because I don't like to move around too much. BUT -- it would also depend on what the alternatives are. Either way, I personally would make sure that any of the places have a great view and a private balcony...but those are my 2 biggies.
