Where to stay in Salzburg, covenient for parking and walkable to Old Town?

Hi, please recommend a good place to stay in Salzburg that's convenient for overnight parking (free or inexpensive), and walkable to Old Town? It looks like it's best to stay across the river in New Town.

I found the Crowne Plaza. Anything else? We're looking for something under $140 eu

Also, questions about the different room types:
* Twins room (but 2 people are allowed?? What kind of bed?)
* Standard (probably a double?)
* Single (? one person, so it's different from twins?)

Thanks!

We were very pleased with the Hotel Bristol. We stayed there several years ago, and I don't remember the rates.

We didn't have a car, so have no information on parking.

But the hotel was great!

A twin room has 2 single beds for 2 people, sometimes pushed together but you can push them apart.

A single room has 1 twin bed for 1 person.

A standard room is a double with either a double bed or 2 twin beds pushed together with a common headboard.

Thanks, all, for your responses.

Now what is the difference betwen 2 singles vs 2 twins? The price seems to be the same. It's so confusing.

If you want help with your confusion why don't you give a link to what you're looking at. It's difficult to answer specific questions unless everyone is looking at the same thing.

Sometimes the price is the same for a single or for a double room. But no one can say for sure w/o looking at the hotel web site.

We stayed at the Wolff Dietrich across the river from old town. Don't know about parking but it is a short walk down a pedestrian street to the bridge. Would stay there again.

Thanks, all, for your help. We booked Sat night at the Sheraton, and put Sun night on hold. It's a Sunday and the price went up quite a bit, so we'll see if it's worth staying there, and move on.

I'll look into the recommendations you have here.

Wow, the Wolff Dietrich sounds like a great deal-- around $100 USD for 4.5 stars rating, including organic breakfast?! Too bad it's sold out this Sun though.

Hi JC98, I stayed at the Sheraton in early January - it was an easy 10 minute walk, if that, across to the old town, and parking on site at the hotel.

Nice place. I loved the lobby and they give out chocolates at the end of your stay - I still have mine , can't bear to eat them yet.

Unfortunately, there's no explanantion of room descriptions anywhere. Here are other weird ones I saw for the same hotel:
* Single room, double bed
* Double room, 2 single beds

Huh?

For Sunday, I'm trying to move to another hotel that's one street behind the Sheraton and it's $100 cheaper (Villa Carlton). It has really good ratings too. Think it's worth moving?

We like staying in the Old Town at either the Goldenen Ente or the Weisses Kreuz. Last time we stayed there the WK had parking in front of the hotel which is right behing the Cathedral. Staying at the GE you will park in the cave (outside the town walls near the festival hall). Salzburg Altstadt is pretty small so the walk from the cave to the GE is no more than 10 minutes. A single is for one person a double is for two and will probably be two single beds pushed together.

Another vote for the Wolff- Dietrich. My wife and I stayed there two years ago and it was excellent. The price and location were both hard to beat.

Surprised that even the Sheraton in Salzburg has different rates for 1 vs 2 people per room?? When we booked, it says 1 Queen, but the reservation shows up as 1 adult. We called the hotel, and they said there's a surcharge for the 2nd person--14 euros a day?? What a ripoff.

My business travel agent said don't bother to tell them there are 2 people. Would they catch us? And when we called, we didn't request to have 2 people in the room since we might want to consider a different hotel, but they went ahead and changed our reservation and tagged on the surcharge. Hmm, seems quite unprofessional.

Anyone with a similar experience?

In many places in Europe, it is quite common to set the rate for hotel rooms based on the number of people rather than the room. Just a different way of doing things. If breakfast is included in the rate, then they definitely need to charge extra for the second person.

When you called the hotel, you said you asked about a second person, and they added a second person to the reservation - seems reasonable to me. Not at all unprofessional. If you keep the reservation, there will be 2 people in the room.

And no, you shouldn't just not tell them there are 2 people. They will notice when you walk in and out of the hotel, notice when they clean the room and it is obvious that 2 people have stayed in there. The hotel will likely kick you out as soon as they notice. I think it may even be illegal to misrepresent the number of people in the hotel room because of fire codes and the requirement that hotel staff forward your passport info onto the local police when you stay in a room - I believe that hotels are required to know exactly who is occupying their rooms, so they take it seriously.

If I were you, I'd stop listening to that business travel agent. He doesn't sound like he is worth the air he breathes. First he tells you that you don't need an IDP to drive in Austria and now he is telling you to lie to the hotel staff so you can save a lousy 14 euro/night. Who knows what other bad advice he's given.

I certainly agree with Nov. Moon. What an unprofessional travel agent. Reminds me of a certain travel guru who (used to) recommend that people make their lunch sand. from the breakfast buffet. Have a great trip. It sounds like you will get better info here than from that agent.

Agree with your advice to stay safe. We'll stick with the reservation for both nights, and the rate for the Sun night is now actually the same as Sat if we book both nights. I called the hotel and requested for a room with a view of the park. Hopefully, we'll get it.

Strange that the travel agents (different ones that I talked to since it's big company) give advice like this.

Thanks, all, for your help! If you're familiar with the area, I also have other questions on other threads (look at the bottom of the thread to see my latest questions.) We're flying out tonight!

Thanks!
