Where to rent a house for a week in Italy?

The idea is a week in Italy, 4 friends, to relax, eat well and enjoy the culture. Tuscany seems the obvious choice but maybe a coastal area is better? Any thoughts or experienced villa renters out there?

There are endless options---time of year may be a factor.
Look at slowtrav.com for rental referrals, but pick region first. Tuscany is hard to beat, but I love the Ligurian coast and the lakes as well.

Oddly, I just met a fellow who said he's used the following for many many trips. Other posters can comment as it's second-hand info to me:

Also, do a search here and you'll find many reports about where people stayed.
