When to buy airline tickets for May trip?

Does anyone know when is the best time to buy airline tickets to London? We are planning our trip in May and I'm wondering if the prices I'm seeing now are as good as it gets? $769 roundtrip from Orlando. Little worried about the exchange rate, may be a bad year to go there.

Everybody says airfares will continue to rise. You might luck into a sale but you would have to be very vigilent to catch one at the exact time & date you need. I'd go for it.
In fact, I did.

We traveled in September last year -- and bought our tickets in April -- so about 5 months out.

If you're ok with prices as they are now, buy them and don't look back. I don't think they're headed down anytime soon either.

Orlando to London and return is probably difficult because of the Europeans coming to Florida on holiday.

If you were from some other eastern city, say Philadelphia or Boston, I would say that $769 is probably a pretty good price. Fantastic would be about $200 less and that trying around the end of January to early February might be worth the wait.

From Orlando, it is hard to say. Ask some travel agents what their idea of a rock bottom fare is. If you get close, you'll know you've found a bargain.

I think you may be able to get this flight for as low $574, if your dates are flexible in May. First, take Continental via Newark to Cologne, Germany, for $464. Then, take an EasyJet flight from Cologne to London Gatwick for $110.

1. There is currently a fare sale on Continental to Cologne, Germany. You can fly from Orlando to Cologne, routing through Newark, for as low as $464 ($382 plus $82 taxes/fees) round-trip on some dates in May. The fare sale is only good through mid-May I think (check the Continental site for dates and details).

2. Checking www.whichbudget.com, several budget carriers fly from Cologne to the UK (London Gatwick and London Stansted). If you can capture the cheapest Easyjet flight (for example) from Colgone to London Gatwick, it would cost you 55 GBP, which is about $110. (I checked dates in March, since May is not posted yet.)

Well, it is about $200 cheaper than what you are seeing. But it will route you through Cologne and then to London. It may or may not be worth the trouble to you, depending on the convenience of the connections, the amount of time you have and your general tolerance for an extra stop.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

I don't think there are any direct flights from Orlando to Europe, so if $769 is considered to be a good rate for Philly, then it should be a very good rate for Orlando.

Continental, Virgin, and British all fly non-stops from Orlando to London and there is further competition in that market from delta (flying through Atlanta) and USAirways (flying through Charlotte).

Have you looked at fares using www.itasoftware.com or www.onetravel.com

I found lower prices in May just putting in some "test" dates using both of those sites.

Hi T,

Have you looked at www.kayak.com and www.mobissimo.com?

The Continental Direct Flight from Orlando is a code share with Virgin. Virgin has free alcohol and great movies. You can also get your miles with Continental. None of this "that will be 5 dollars." I would go this route.

Thanks all for your help! Will try the websites. Not a lot of wiggle room for dates since I work in a school.

I bought our tickets XNA to MUC and return MUC to XNA for May 21 to June 5 on Sidestep.com for $733.00 each. You might try them?
