Weather and Crete
We are leaving for Crete in a week. i was wondering about the weather. I know what weather.com says (70's-80's) for late May and early June. But does anyone know if that is relative to the U.S.? 70's and 80's are shorts weather in Florida. But with the breeze and mountains and such, does it feel cooler? Is this a dumb question? Also, with it being an island, is it humid? Just curious.

Not a dumb question, but how people perceive temperature is such a personal thing (i.e. most of the year I live in a northern country, and so temperatures in the 70s and 80s are pretty hot to me -- on the otherhand, my mother-in-law lives in the south and is, well, older, and she seems to never be warm unless it is in the 90s. But, generally speaking Crete in late May and early June is pleasantly warm. There is a breeze, particularly in the evenings. My approach is to dress lighter during the day, and have a sweater available at night. Shorts? Hard to say, since we don't wear them. I wear light dresses, or skirts and T-shirts, and my husband wears light slacks or jeans, and we have both always been comfortable. There is not a huge amount of humidity at the time of year you are travelling. Overall, the climate is most commodious. Enjoy your trip!!

...actually, did do the bathing suit bit in mykonos..but that was at the beginning of the trip..i think we stayed in a very nice hotel on pettassos (sp?) beach..it was nice because each room had a lot of privacy..reminded me of habitat at expo..in crete we actually stayed in heraklyon..we went to knossos and my comment re the lack of crowds was based on our visit there..we rented a car and spent several days driving over the island...we were really there for the history ect rather than the beaches..but that was a deliberate choice..hope you have nearly as much fun as we did..i think my favorite islands were mykonos and santorini..but very much enjoyed crete...as well as rhodes and kos...obviously enjoyed everything and each island is so unique..

thanks Brother - we will be on the Northeast side - Elounda. We hope to be able to do some swimming - do you think that is feasible for oct 3-10??
Also, it is likely that Mykonos will have warmer weather in early october. We will be honeymooning in Santorini and want to visit Crete (and maybe Mykonos) - wherever we are more likely to enjoy the beaches and water.

thanks Yipper - as with all weather , i am sure "it depends" , but it sounds like generally we can do some swimming. I am assuming that crete, being the furthest south would also improve our chances.

"They" say that you can swim year round some places on the southern coast of Crete. (I realize that Elounda is on the north) The southern coast is actually closer to Africa than it is to mainland Greece.

jgkocis, we were there late September and it was hot and beautiful. We swam every day. I know Crete is a popular holiday destination for the British well into October, so I think you have a pretty good chance of fine weather.

thanks marilyn, that is great info. we are going to do several days in santorini and athens, and were deciding between mykonos and crete, and think we are siding towards crete because of the weather (we will be doing the exploring in athens and santorini and want the 3rd location to be someplace we can get R&R on the beach). Thanks so much
