We survived Italy in August.
Just got back from Venice, Siena, Rome.
(and Paris & London)

Venice and Seina were in the high 70s. Rome was in the 80's. Not bad at all in the shade.
We needed our sweatshirts in Paris and London.

Someone told us to expect Venice to be wall to wall Americans....Well not in August. It was wall to wall French and Italians (and some Germans)

In Siena, we felt like the only Americans there. They were starting to gear up for Palio. The last day we were there the city was awash with Italians.

Someone told us that Paris would be deserted, and we would see few French people. Well some of the small shops were in fact closed, but while in line for the Eiffel Tower we observed that most people were speaking French. So I guess a lot of French tourists hit Paris in August too.

The only time we really felt the heat was in Rome. It was about 88. But there was a nice breeze. We brought along a little spray bottle of water to mist ourselves...Helped a lot.

I am not sure why I have read so much negative stuff about traveling in August. My only other available choice was to travel in January. I am glad we picked August. Also I read that historically July is actually a few degrees hotter in Italy than August.

So if the only time you can go is in August,
GO!
Its no big deal. We had a great time.

Glad you survived Italy in August. I just survived Berlin & Paris. I had some hot days and thunderstorms, but taking an extra shower made me feel better. Also, it cools off at night--unlike the US East Coast.

Of course, lots of the restaurants in the neighborhoods were closed in Paris, but I never had a problem finding a place to eat. The only downside to Paris in August--in my opinion--is that the big ticket theaters are closed. Unfortunately, it is difficult for me to travel other than in August.

I had a fine time too.
