Stop and see the cliffs on your way to Tralee.
From Dublin to Cliften stop and see Clonmcnoise.

As answer 1, depends on your interests. I am guessing this is an off the shelf fly drive tour so the accommodation was the main draw.
Clontarf Castle gives all the usual Dublin features.
Abbeyglen is walking distance into Clifden on the bottom of the Sky Rd, If you are active take a walk up to the Darcy memorial behind the Hotel fro a great view of Clifden and the Ben;s to the east and along the estuary to the sea to the west. Clifden castle is worth a look if within your walkable range. Lots of music in town as well.
Clifden to Ballyseede has the run to Galway and down through Clare the Cliffs and Burren are possible but there is a lot more to see and do depending on time constraints and interests.
