Visiting Oslo
Hello, folks. My wife and I are in our 70's and can't exert ourselves too much. We'll be visiting Ireland from the USA in September and I thought of flying to Norway as a side trip. Most of the postings talk of the NIN combo, that is Oslo, train to Bergen and then a cruise in the fjords. That would be too much for us on this trip. My question is, is Oslo alone for 2 or 3 days worth the expense of flying there from Ireland, or would it be more adviseable to wait another year and do the NIN tour?

If the only reason you can't exert yourselves too much this trip is because of some physical handicap that should be resolved by next year, I would recommend waiting until next year.
If, however, it's possible that you will not be able to go to Norway next year for any reason, I'd say take the time to go and visit Oslo. To me, it is one of the most underrated cities I've been to, and so much to see and do. Yes, the NIN tour is a highlight of any trip to Norway, and while people adore Bergen (what's not to like?!?), Oslo is enchanting on its own. If you wait until next year, I would also highly recommend heading up to Trondheim, especially in summer, when you have light nearly 24 hours a day. Trondheim is my favorite place in all of Norway.

Oslo is worth the time and money I think. A lot of things to see and just wonderful in the summer. Boat-rides on the Oslo-fjord, folk museum, viking ships, holmenkollen ski jump arena, frognerpark and of course the new opera building.

Thank you very much for your replies. No disbilities, but when you'r close to 80, traveling can be tiring. I was in Norway in 1961, before the oil fields opened, and Stavanger was a quiet town. Visited Bodo and Andenes - I remember the police patroling in small Volkswagon Beetles.

Love Oslo and it's certainly worth your time.
That said, NIN is a pretty low impact trip with most of the time spent on buses, trains and boats. I actually think that you'd be less taxed doing NIN than sightseeing in Oslo.

Maybe you can judge from here if there is enough of interest http://www.visitoslo.com
Personally I wouldn't stress myself and use up 2 days of a holiday just in the travelling to get to Oslo - there is more than enough to see and do in Ireland. Come back next year and concentrate on Norway.
