Vienna to Krakow 8-9 days: suggested itinerary?
Our two families (four adults, four teenagers) will be off to Vienna in late June, returning from Krakow nine days later. We plan to spend at least two nights in Vienna and at least three in Krakow. En route to Krakow, we will be driving through Slovakia with the possibility of one or two intermediate stops on the way. Two places we are considering are Trencin and Zakopane, suspecting that the latter may be the more interesting of the two. At this point, we are open to suggestions and reasonably flexible given the overall time constraint. Ideas, please. Thanks.

Trencin is interesting. Zilina is a bit farther along the route and is also a nice town. Of course, Zakopane is probably the most interesting of all, but you are practically in Krakow when you get that far. Other than the fact Zakopane isn't halfway, it's a good choice. For halfway (more or less) I'd pick Zilina, but Trencin wouldn't be a bad half-day visit on the way. Good luck.

Just returned from Krakow. We didn't go to Zakopane, however it was offered as a day trip from out hotel, so it is nearby. . There's a lot to do in Krakow; a lot of day trips. Definitely go to the salt mines - very fascinating. The tour takes 2 hours. Not sure when the times change, but there was an English tour at 10 and 12/12:30. Auschwitz takes a whole day, was very fascinating - needed more time there. Krakow is VERY cheap. The only problem we had is that when getting money from the ATM, it would spit out $100 notes. We had a hard time cashing them. Later found out that some people only make a 100 zloty a week. Have fun.

If you have never been to Vienna or Krakow, they both deserve more time. Zakopane is a two-hour bus ride (faster than train) from Krakow with a couple of stops, so with car, should be less time. Bratislava is a one-hour train ride from Vienna.

On way to Zakopane try staying on Slovakian side (which is much cheaper), and you get more for your buck! Once in Zakopane you may want to try private accomodations which will be cheaper then hotels etc. Also don't miss big market Behind Gazda Hotel, This market now extended from Lift to Gobalowka station all the way to Gazda... so before buying just make sure you walk all the way to Gobalowka and decide on best buy. And there are a lot of deals here. Btw in Krakow you be able to buy same goods but for at least 25% extra if not much more in price.
