Vienna and Salzburg itinerary advice

We would like advice on our upcoming trip to Austria. Four of us plan to see sights, but also want time to savor the cities. We love the architecture that Europe has to offer. We love to walk/hike, so walking is not an issue.

Vienna: will be arriving by train from Munich. Staying in Inner Stadt for 3 days. Plan to take underground to Inner Stadt and walk to hotel. Must see/do include walk Ringstrasse, see Schonbrunn Palace (allowing half day plus), Hofburg Palace area, Stephansdom Cathedral. If practice session available for Lipizanner Stallions available, great. Sit at cafes and enjoy the delights that are Vienna.

Salzburg: arrive by train from Vienna. Staying just outside city for 3 days. Must see/do include Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg Cathedral, Mirabell Gardens, old city walking and eating. Possible Mozart concert at fortress. No tickets purchased yet. We will use bus system in Salzburg, but are not convinced getting the Salzburg Card is worth it. Is it advisable to just purchase bus tickets as needed, or even a week ticket?

We want to enjoy each city and not make it exhausting. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Vienna has a bunch of great museums - do check them out. And I would get tickets for a performance at the Spanish Riding school. A half a day might be rushing Schoenbrunn i fyou want to see all of the gardens - but it's a very easy ride on the subway.

Can't help much with Salzburg - since we stayed right across the river from the Alt Stadt - so didn't use anything but feet in touring the city.

Hi nytraveler,
We are planning at least 1/2 day at Schonbrunn. Between the gardens and palace there is a lot to see. Yes, we have looked at the subway to get to palace and it seems very direct from Inner Stadt.
Any museum in particular that is a Must See?
Thanks!

What time of the year? During the summer months both Vienna and Salzburg are hot and humid, and that mightaffect your activities.

If you are a Klimt fan, the Upper Belvedere Palace just a few tram stops from the Vienna Stasoper station on tram D is not to be missed.
Why walk Ringstrasse? You can do the loop on tram by combining #2 and #1 as no one "regular" tram makes the loop. There is a yellow touristy tram with audio guide that does the whole loop.

Trip is in a few weeks. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

Walking Ringstrasse.. Well, we like to walk and it allows us a chance to go at our own pace. 5.3 km is a nice walk with chances to stop and see what we want. Have thought about a carriage ride though. Will have to check out the Upper Belvedere Palace, thanks.

I agree with Greg - the Ring is a looong walk, and trams will make it much easier and faster. I think a walk all the way around would get tedious. The scale is so large that the scenery changes slowly, if that makes sense.

Since you are going to Schonbrunn you can miss the dreary Hofburg, but definitely see the crown jewels in the Schatzkammer at the Hofburg. Separate entrance.

Karlskirche is probably the most architecturally significant church in Vienna, so definitely see that. Just southeast of the Ring.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the best in Europe for Old Masters. A very beautiful building too.

Curious about your itinerary - train from Munich, then back to Salzburg? Is that right?

Based on advice on previous travelers to Vienna, it sounds like the best option is the tram. Not sure about the yellow one... And the mobile app, will check that out.

Robertino, thanks for advice on crown jewels and Karlskirche. The K Museum is on our list. And yes, (sigh), you understand itinerary correctly, we know it's a bit of backtracking, but.... Original plan was start Munich and end up in Vienna, but... It changed due to costs.

Salzburg is pretty small! The times I've gone with my family, we walked everywhere. I've never taken a bus in Salzburg. I think the things you mention are more than do-able in three days.

We always buy tickets on the spot, though we've only ever done day-trips there (my family lives nearby).

This probably wasn't very helpful, but anyway, I hope you have fun! Its an amazing city!

The Eagle's Nest is a very worthwhile day trip from Salzburg. Beautiful views, and very interesting historically. You can get there easily via local bus.

Depending on your interests, the Sound of Music Tour was a lot of fun.
