Vienna and Prague over Xmas

Hello- I am American and was interested in going to Vienna and Prague over Xmas vacation. Any experience out there with these (2) beautiful cities "off season"? Will the weather be amenable to walking the cities? Will stores and things be closed or on hiatus? Appreciate any thoughts or recommendations.

I did this same trip a couple of years ago. It was bloody cold and snowing, especially in Vienna but that certainly did not stop us from walking the soles off our shoes. Both cities are very festive around the holidays.

Will you be going a few days before christmas? If so I hope you will be able to catch the Christmas markets in Vienna. Spittelberg (sp?) the palace and Weinachsmarkt at the rathaus are all superb markets.

The train ride was especially beautiful with the countryside all covered in snow.

Thank you! I wont be arriving until 12/26...I can't miss Xmas with the family. I wonder if the Xmas markets will still be on for a few days after? Trying now to figure out how to split up our trip. I think it will end up being 3 days in each country.

Alas, the Christmas markets close on christmas day. But that doesn't make it any less desireable. Less tourists anyway!

Which city will you be in on New Years?

The Christmas markets will be over on the 26th. The 26th is a Monday as well as a holiday. Many museums will be closed.

Vienna is a world class location for New Years celebrations.

Hard to predict weather, but heavy snow/freezing rain might make extensive walking difficult. Good luck.
