I stayed at Harington's Hotel in Bath in November 2000. My entire family stayed there, we had five rooms. All of them were nice. You have to go up several flights of narrow stairs to get to your room. So, if you're going to have lots of luggage or have trouble with steps, it may not be a good fit for you.

If steps don't bother you, I'd highly recommend Harington's. The people who worked there were really nice and helpful. The rooms are a decent size. It isn't fancy. The breakfast was pretty good. And most importantly, the location is perfect. It's just blocks from everything: Roman Baths, Pump Room, Abbey, Crescent, Assembley Rooms/Costume Museum, I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

Interesting sidenote: the guy at the front desk advised us not to go to the pub that's right across the street from the hotel. He said it had a rough crowd, that it was a biker bar. Well, from what I saw, bikers in Bath are mighty tame (they were wearing polos and khakis and listening to Morrisey - oooh, scary). Anyway, you may want to avoid that pub unless you're interested in the seamy side of life in Bath. Bath is so beautiful and genteel that even its punks are elegant.

Thanks so much for the comments on Haringtons - the location looks great - as you have confirmed. Did you have a car when you went. We won't for most of the time but I may try to pick it up the night before we head out to the countryside. Any parking issues?

Thanks for the heads up on the "biker bar" - I'll be with my Mom and we probably won't be frequenting a lot of pubs anyway.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. No, we didn't have a car. We had hired a small bus with a driver (since there were 11 of us) to drive us from Winchester, Stonehenge, Bath, Castle Combe, Thornbury Castle to London. We didn't need a car at all in Bath. Everywhere is in easy walking distance, although there are a few hills.

Parking in Bath looked like a nightmare. I can't remember if Harington's offered parking or not. Their website should say. If you're arriving by train, I'd get a taxi to the hotel, then walk everywhere else. Then pick up your car the morning you leave.

I loved Bath. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I wish I knew about your London hotel. I've never heard of it. I've only been to London twice, and stayed at opposite ends of the spectrum: Travel Inn at County Hall was a cheap, plain, motel-type place with a great location; the Trafalgar Hilton was ultra-mod, fancy, expensive (I didn't have to pay for it), also in a great location.

I hope you have a great time, I'm sure you will.
Erica
