Hope someone can tell me is there any TV in English (or E/subtitled) in Brittany in the Rennes area. From my search it seems pay/satelite may provide same but not available otherwise on 'normal' TV channels?<BR>I have a son visiting there and think he has withdrawal symtoms!!!

If you are speaking of French regular TV, I would not expect anything in English at all except the odd film on TV with subtitles. Your channels will all be in French with perhaps one in Breton (the local language spoken by many of the natives in addition to French).<BR><BR>If cable TV is available that generally includes a channel or two from Great Britain.

Thanks Lauren, I was pretty sure this would be the case. My son said an English show came on last week but was dubbed over in French (no English s/titles).

if there is cable you will receive the ubiquitous CNN and SkyTV - otherwise not much in English.

My son has the same problem in Japan..and he cannot get cable in his apt building.Thank goodness for a vcr and videos, or he would probably go crazy~We got him a world band radio so he can at least listen to English-language news and programming.<BR>

uhm what could he do? Oh, yeah learn Japanese - duh!

uhm, since you obviously don't understand these things---having lived in Japan for a year and a half and taking lessons weekly, he can speak some Japanese.But if you knew anything about it- you would know that people learning Japanese,which has 2 alphabets, usually take about 5 years to be able to speak at a 2 year olds level.He is there teaching English, so it is also difficult because people want to practice their English when they talk to him,which makes it more difficult to practice.Duh.

Hi,Liz: cable will probably be his only hope.I stayed in Strasbourg for a semester one year and even with speaking elementary French, I did miss English speaking tv...<BR>and I am wondering if "uhm" speaks so many languages that he/she can make these statements,"learn Japanese" ---

You cannot receive British TV in the Rennes area as it's too far from England transmitters. If you however go to St Malo or Cotentin peninsular, you may get signal from the Channel Islands which lie only 30 miles or so. There will be no English language channel on French terrestial TV. You normally get TF1, M6, France 2, Arte, FR3, and subscription channel Canal+. To get English channel, you have to subscribe to cable/satellite, but usually you only get free channels like CNN, Sky News, BBC News 24 and BBC World. There is no easy way of getting regular BBC or ITV channels or Sky Sports or Movies, unless you unofficially take your Sky Digital equipment with subscription over there, as many ex-pats and British/Irish bar owners have done. I suggest your son seeks out such a venue (there are bound to be such bars in Rennes, a student place).
