Travelling to Bologna (Italy) with toddler in August?

We are thinking about visiting Bologna with our two sons, aged 7 years and 19 months, in August. Is it just too hot to go around at this time of the year (even if we stay at a residence with AC)? We thought Bologna would be a good choice since one can also take several day trips to other locations.
Any advice would be welcome, thanks!

Hello pongised, Bologna is a beautiful city in my opinion and I love it. But yes, it will not only be hot it will be quite humid. That is a given. Regarding AC in Italy, normally the AC in Italy is not as efficient as we have in the US (I am assuming you live in the US). When you refer to a residence do you mean an apartment versus a hotel? If so be aware that often when an apartment is advertised with AC it is only in one room and not central AC as we have in the US.

You are correct that one can take a lot of day trips from Bologna, that is one advantage of staying in Bologna. Would you be renting a car or taking day trips by train?

Personally, although I live in an area that gets up to the triple digits in summer I will not be in Italy during August unless I am in the Dolomiti where the air is cool and fresh.

Just my personal thoughts pongised, especially since you will have a 7 year old and a toddler. But no doubt others will have different opinions. Best regards.

There are various website that offer historic temperatures for various cities. A lot (if not most) merchants, museums, etc still close for an extended lunch (2 to three hours). So you can be off the street at mid-day and still not miss anything.

August is the peak vacation month for Europe and the UK. Do you have any other options (September etc)?

Thanks for the tips on having the AC in one room but not all of the apartment. (We thought an apartment would be much better with a 19 month old than a hotel room). We do live in the US (in Ohio) and we do appreciate the AC when it gets really hot (the 90's over here, but very humid). I am not sure travelling in such humid heat is a good idea with a little toddler...we could have him in a stroller but lots of steps and other obstacles would make it difficult. We would not rent a car but take trains or buses...Perhaps we'll consider the Dolomiti for August...

Pongised, I am curious as to what you decided to do and if you went to Bologna, how you found it with your toddler. We are trying to decide on a destination for Sept or October with our toddler and Bologna is on the short list.
