Our last active day in Italy (Florence) is October 21, 2011. We are leaving Italy from FCO at 6:00 am on October 22, 2011. What is the most economical way to get to FCO from Florence: by car from Florence or FLR to FCO or by train (Florence-Termini-Leonardo Express)? We are 2 adults.

Cars, you can go to online car rental sites and get an immediate quote.

For train, use www.trenitalia.it, choose English, enter Firenze, Roma Aeroporto Fiumicino and search. The default is express trains. Since you want the cheapest options, click "all solutions" to display slow trains and get prices for IC+R type trains.

Well I certainly wouldn't rent a car for a day just to get from Florence to FCO. It wouldn't be economical or even sensible, IMO. The trains work just fine and are cheap. You're obviously going to need a hotel for the night of the 21st, so find one near the airport and take an afternoon train.

If you already have the car on a long term basis and are not returning it in Florence, car may be cheaper (one day rental plus the fuel and tolls). But I doubt it.

I think a car may work out cheaper depending on how many people. The AV train is 45E a person from Florence to Rome and another 14E from Rome to FCO.
