traveling alone to Ireland - need some advice

I am a 60 year old (American) female who decided to treat myself to a trip to Ireland this coming May. I have been to Ireland 4 or 5 times but have always gone to the North (Belfast, Ballycastle, Rathlin Island) and stayed with friends. This time I am going all alone and flying in to Shannon. My trip will only be about 6 days total in Ireland so I want to make the most of it. I have a rental car reserved but am leery about driving there. I had originally planned on going to Dingle but I see that it is about 3 hours from Shannon so now I am looking at other possibilities a little closer. Many years ago I spent a day or two in and near Galway, Spiddal and Clifden and wouldn't mind going there again. I just want to be near the water. I love fishing villages and hate touristy places. Also thinking maybe Kilkee, Doolin, Miltown Malbay, etc. When I look at highways on the map (i.e. N67, N68) are these 2 lane roads or motorways? I plan on staying at B&Bs and just walking around and chatting with the locals and seeing the sights. I need any advice that I can get!

Me and a friend went to Ireland about 10 years ago, we spent a week. We flew into Shannon and out of Dublin. We drove all over that island and had a blast. Galway was my favorite. I loved it and would do it again in a minute. Driving was not that bad, it took a couple hours to get the hang of it, we stayed in B & B's too. The rental car guy said to make sure you keep the white line on your left shoulder, with that in mind we had no problems.

If you use Google maps, zoom in, you can drag ur little man onto the road you want and see just what its like for example http://goo.gl/maps/JMhNT

If I keep the white line on my left shoulder from the drivers seat surely to whoever I'd be on the wrong side the road?? Keep the point of the drivers side front corner on the middle line where you can just as you would do at home.. The fear of driving in Ireland is far worse than actually doing it..

If you hate Touristy places you would do well to avoid Doolin, Dingle and Kinsale.. If you are over later in May I can recommend Ennis for the Fledh Nua and whilst not on the coast the best touring base for all of County Clare including East Clare over here by Lough Derg which is anything but touristy.

I'll also be there around the same time in the same location! If you're ever in the market for a sightseeing buddy I'll be happy to help out with gas.
