Travel tips for Austria

My wife and I will be visiting Austria for 10 days in mid September. Here is our rough itinery: 3 nights in Vienna, then rent a car,and on to Salzburg for 2 nights. Then head south, and possibly stay in a rural inn for a few nights for some hiking. We then may spend a night in Klagenfort and explore Carinthia. We then may cross over into Italy for a night in the Italian alps. Then on to Graz where we fly out. If anyone has any suggestions for spots not to miss, or places to stay I would love some input. We tend to favor small inns and B&B's that are not to 'resorty' feeling.
A few questions - What can we expect as far as weather? Are there any areas between Vienna and Salzburg that might be worth a night's stay?

The weather should be pleasant and the foliage lovely. Depending on your route, we loved the town of Melk. Our plan called for us to stay there two nights, but we found it so pleasant we stayed for 5, including 1 night we were in Budapest and still paid for our room in Melk.

I live in Austria. September ist perfect for cities and walking the countryside.
Dont't miss the Salzkammergut between Vienna and Salzburg. It's a 3 hour drive from Vienna. I would visit Hallstadt and Gmunden. In September you can swim in the lakes. If you like mountains, try the Traunstein in Gmunden or the Totes Gebirge.

This is directed to David,

What type of clothing do you recommend packing for a trip to Vienna in mid-September? Especially for an 83 yr old. whom does not like being cold.
Thanks

Doug, Go to Melk from Vienna and then
south thru Gmunden. Stay at either.
However, then drive down and spend time
in Hallstatt enroute to St. Gilgen.
This is the perfect place to stay and
explore the Salzkammergaut area. You can even stay here to see Salzburg
which is only:40 by bus or train.
Stay at the Gasthof Kendler. This is a
village right out of a movie set--enjoy

It's been a few years, but I second the recommendation of Halstatt and the Salzkammergut area, including Bad Ischl and other towns around the Wolfsee. Incredibly scenic, with opportunities for hiking and water sports.

Why not go to Linz? It is a charming town just about half-way between Vienna and Salzburg. I stayed at the Drei Morens Hotel, a small hotel in the center of town.
