Trains from Varenna to Verona on sundays.
I need to travel by train from Varenna to Verona, on a sunday.
I assume I have to go first to Milan Central and then get on another train.
Does anyone know where I can find timetable info for this, or suggest any other route.
Thanks
Mandy

Usually take the regional train to Bergamo then Brechia
change train easy hang a left maybe 40 minutes to Verona.
Prefer Desanzano di Garda Hotel Vitorrio awesome lake views
15 minutes west of Verona more euroindustrial old town and
arena are nice...
www.trenitalia.it usually lots more expense time and hassle
to backtrack to Milano Centrale
Easy to hop regional trains for me from 2 euro per hour
cheap easy and fun... Happy Travels!

The best route is to go via Milano Centrale and change once - it will also be much quicker than the regional train route perhaps. To go by regional train you'd have to change at both Monza and Bergamo I think and those trains are so so slow and also cost a whole lot more than 2 euros an hour - that is very dated info IMO. For lots about Italian trains I always highlight these info-laden sites - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com. there should be about hourly trains Varenna-Esino as the station there is called I believe and more than hourly Milan to Verona trains - but do NOT take a regional train as they can take literally forever and are not nearly as comfy as the faster trains.

There are several trains each taking about 3 hours with a connection in Milano. The times are every 2 hours at 08:37, 10:37, 12:37 etc. The cost is reasonable at 33.60 for 1st and 24.75E in 2nd class. The walk is uphill to the Varenna station--plan ahead--it may not be manned.

In any case have no fear of being able to get on any of those trains - just buy your tickets once in Varenna. No need to advance purchase even though on trenitalia.com you may get a minor discount Milan to Verona but you must lock yourself into a specific train and it is I think non-changeable nor refundable. Seat reservations are mandatory on Milan to Verona trains except the taking all day regional trains and the seat reservation will be included when you buy your ticket at no extra fee.

When I was there, the Varenna station was not manned. You bought your train tickets at the corner cafe. (Or maybe from a machine?)
Anyway, this is to say the corner cafe may not be equipped to sell train tickets for elsewhere in Italy.

Many sleepy Italian train stations are like Minar says IME - most I have seen do have automatic ticket machines on the actual platform or perhaps the caffe - but good advice from Minar - be prepared to buy your Milan to Verona ticket in Milan unless you buy it beforehand from some other Italian station previous to getting to Varenna. Or try the fickle and very frustrating to use to many fodorites (to wit the legions of posts saying so!) say www.trenitalia.com site where you may even find a discounted (but train specific and not easily changeable if changeable I think) ducat.
