Train or drive to Venice
My family is leaving Tuscany (just S of Florence) on a Saturday morning & going to Venice. We will have 2 rental cars which are not due back until 11:00 that day. Are we better off getting an early start, driving to Padua to drop the car & taking the train in from there, or ditching the cars in Florence & taking the train all the way? Thanks!

Hi luv,
Assuming that there are more than 4 of you in the two cars, I think you are better off driving to Mestre if you can drop the cars there.
www.viamichelin.com says you can go from Florence to Padua in about 2hr and to Mestre in 2:15 hr.

If you already have the rental cars and your already paying to drop off in a different city than you picked up in you might as well go all the way. I've driven from Florence to Venice, its a long drive and not much to look at once you get outside of Bologona but I'm assuming you have a lot of people with you to have 2 rental cars, so I would think the cars are going to be a lot cheaper than taking a train. I'd either drive all the way to Venice or drop them off in Florence.

We also couldn't decide to drive or train, but then a rail strike made the decision for us. We drove from Castellina to Venice on a Saturday morning and made a few stops along the way which were quite enjoyable. The drive was very easy.
The only office open on a Saturday afternoon...in our case...was at Marco Polo airport, which worked out fine.
My one suggestion should you drop off the car at the airport, would be to drive to the terminal and have someone go in to purchase the water transport tickets, and then drop off the car. The lots are close to the boats and the walk was not far.
