This may not be much help, but I do know there is a TGV station right outside the city which is accessible by bus from the city. There is also a train station in the city itself. (this is all just right outside the "gate". I have only come to and from the TGV station via bus to Avignon. Do not know about access to the airport. Happy travels!

I did a quick search and it appears that it would be best to take a train from Avignon to Marseille, and then just take the airport bus from the train station. 8.50€ for the bus, which runs every 20 minutes starting at 5:30 a.m.

The website seems to prefer to send you from Avignon TGV to Aix TGV, and then by airport bus to Marseille Provence airport.
This is quite convenient since Aix TGV is halfway between the airport and Aix, and the airport is appr. as close to Aix TGV as to Marseille city. The airport bus from Marseille will probably see more traffic and potential delays than the one going from Aix TGV.
Cannot comment if the price for the whole journey is okay. Looks kinda steep.

You may find the timetables at www.bahn.de easier to use than those at the SNCF site. Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Avignon Centre to Marseille Provence Aeroport, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.
