Temple of Poseidon

We will be on a cruise ship and the port is Athens for one of the stops. We have seen Athens before but this time we would like to visit the Temple of Poseidon. Should we drive on our own to get there by renting a car? If so, where should we rent one (easily accessible once off the ship or should book beforehand?) Is this crazy or should we book a 1/2 day tour? We had received a quote from a tour company which will be charging 153 euros for the car and there are only 2 of us. We thought this was ridiculous and are looking into other options. Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanks.
Also do you need international driver's license to rent a scooter in Mykynos?
Thanks again.

The drive to Cape Souinon (sp?) did not appear difficult, but I was a backseat passenger. There are many pleasant appearing roadside restaurants on the way there, just avoid any that has parking nearby big enough for a tour bus.

Among the major car rental companies, Hertz has the most locations in and about Athens.

There is ample parking and a small restaurant at the Temple. While there is usually a breeze at the Cape, it remains very hot most of the time. Be certain to bring water and head covering.

The drive isn't difficult, though the traffic is crazy. Why not try to find two other compatible people from your cruise ship and share a taxi? We were in Athens for a few days several years ago and shared a taxi with two others from the center of town for less than 25 euros each round-trip. When we arrived at the Cape, we gave the driver a time to return and collect us.

Thank you for all those suggestions. How far is it to the center of town from port?

It's probably about 20-30 minutes by road, depending on the traffic. You can also get into town by Metro. If you're going to Sounio, you can surely get a taxi from the port.
