Taking laptop computer to France and Italy
My husband would like to bring our laptop (new Compaq 1900series) on our vacation/business conference trip. A few questions:
1. Any restrictions on taking a computer from the U.S. to western Europe?
2. Only an adapter plug is needed? (No transformer?)
3. We have a charger that works in our car - anyplace on the plane to use something like this?
4. Any tips for use?
Thanks!

1. No (at least none that I know of)
2. My computer came with a small transformer. And you do need an adapter plug.
3. No
4. Don't bring it if you can avoid it; it's a hassle to keep up with and to carry. Security (theft) is a problem, and you will end up concentrating on keeping track of it and not on the trip, even if it is a business trip.

Most laptops will work up to 220 volt, usually says on the power inlet at the back.
Different European countries have different voltages & power plug shapes - eg different plug from UK to rest of Europe.
The new model of black hackney cab (special taxi used in many UK city centres) has a power outlet specially for laptops.

At the airport don't make it obvious you have a laptop, you may be followed.
(stick it in a plastic bag.)
At the X-ray check, hand it round the side don't leave it with your hand baggage on the conveyor.(scam-after your hand baggage goes on the conveyor you are delayed going through the gate because the alarm keeps going off.By the time you get to your bag...)

If you want to use a modem you'll need an adaptor for the phone socket, different ones for different countries, buy in that country.($5)
