Suggestions for mom & teen son in Rome
My 13 yo son and I will be in Rome for 8 days. Other than a live soccer game (already reserved tickets!) and the obvious Colosseum, Pantheon, any suggestions for "cool" activities that we'd both enjoy? Thanks in advance!

My 12 year old son and I rented bikes one afternoon at the Villa Borghese, which is an immense park, and rode all over. We stopped at the museum and zoo, and rented a boat there as well. He also enjoyed the evening entertainment by buskers at Piazza Navona. Catacombs also a big hit. Have fun!

Leslie,
There is so much to see and do in Rome. You'll have a wonderful time. I would definitely take your son out to the catacombs - we walked down the Appian Way to the catacombs at San Sebastian - a long walk, but no hills and very quiet and beautiful - a nice break from the hectic pace and noise of central Rome. The catacombs have tours in many languages including English, so you just buy your tickets and wait for the right group - it's a facinating tour! It would also be a great place to bring a picnic lunch as well. Have fun!
Jay

climb to the top of St. peter's, visit the Sistine Chapel, shop for cool , cheap watches or tiny radios at the flea market. Eat lots of gelato and pizza, visit Trevi at night and toss in coins for all of his friends....
If he enjoys the fountains, do a fountain tour in the city. There are entire books on them.
Favorite activities of my two sons, ages 11 and 14 when in Rome, included activies already mentioned such as touring the Catacombs, Colosseum and Forum, climbing to the top of St. Peter's and eating gelato at least once a day. They also liked Castel Sant'Angelo, the Santa Maria della Concezione (where the crypt is decorated with the skulls and bones of 4000 monks), and an outdoor comedy called "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire." We had fun going to the market at the Piazza Testaccio, buying lunch and eating at a park on the Aventine Hill. On the walk to the park you can peer through the keyhole of the Villa of the Knights of Malta to zoom in on St. Peter's dome. Very cool.

I believe you are supposed to be fifteen to take the Scavi Necropolis tour...
