Stockholm canal cruising

I took an hour-long archipelago boat ride there in May '99 and was pretty disappointed. The boat was completely enclosed--you couldn't get out on a deck! Also, the entire tour narrative was provided via headset. I suppose it was good for a rest for an hour, and nice enough to see some scenery (though nothing particularly spectacular) that I wouldn't have seen otherwise, but overall sitting inside a boat with a headset on wasn't my most enthralling experience there. Note: this ride was a freebie included with purchase of the Stockholm Card. It's possible that there are other companies that run tours, or that there are more boats with open decks in July than in May. Just check before you board!

We just returned and did take a two hour Archipelago Cruise. Went through two locks. Got around several of the islands. One in particular where there are a lot of waterside summer homes/cottages. Very pretty. Funny episode. We cruised slowly by the cottages. As we approached one very nice one, a middle-aged man and two teenage young ladies were trotting down to their boat slip. As we passed, they boarded the boat and all waved. As we waved back, they suddenly turned around, drew down their suits and mooned us in unision. The boat I was on was sparsely populated, but we roared with laughter. They pulled up their suits, turned around and waved again, smiling. Of course we waved back again, smiling.

Our boat had an open area and the enclosed area had large windows that could be opened. The part of the cruise that was in the inner-harbor was very interesting. Good views of the City. All in all, it was delightful.

I have taken several in the city and in the archipelago. The one I liked best is the one to Drottningholm. You can get the boat near the City Hall. I'm guessing it is a trip of about an hour. You spend whatever time you like there and then catch the boat back.
