Staying at the Hotel Plaza Mayor, Madrid

We'll be staying at the Hotel Plaza Mayor for about 5 days starting Nov. 6. I've looked at a map, and it looks like a long walk to the Prado. And there doesn't seem to be a subway stop that's convenient to the museum. Does anyone know if there's a bus that's convenient and, if so, what the number(s) is? Thanks, Joe

I don't think it is that far (?). I have stayed at Hotel Mora on Paseo del Prado, across the street from Museo del Prado and Atocha Station and walked to Plaza Mayor every night; 15 minute walk max.

I used the Banco de Espana metro stop to go to the Prado. It's a pleasant walk from there through the park. It isn't really terribly far from Plaza de Mayor, though, as long as you don't veer off. It's probably only a bit longer than from the Banco de Espana metro stop.

Sorry, I don't know the bus lines, I imagine there might be one from there, though.

We walked to the Prado from that area as well. It's a pleasant 15 minutes walk.

it is a walk...doable down hill going, but there are buses everywhere..and the tourist 2 day pass is well worth it.
as said in earlier post, beware of the theives wroking the buses and metro.
could not believe the things i saw in my two working days.

i was "protecting" a colleague who had never been to spain, and he was shocked.

so. actually, the tourist bus is safer.. ( more expensive for theives to ride and fewer stops for them to get off, less crowded, no one is standing rubbing against you)...goes everywhere you want to go, and very frequent.

but the local buses, a ten ride pass is only abut 5.50, are very good, frequent and easy to manuever.

last week there was a special thursday night gallery festival.. which i dont know if it is every thursday.
all the galleries in the museum triangle were open til midnight.

do not miss having a drink at night behind the teatro real, facing the royal palace lit up. it is gorgeous.
a few restaurants have outdoor seating. it is one of my favorite spots.

We just got back and stayed at Plaza Mayor. The walk to the Prado is maybe 15 minutes. We walked from Prado to Reina Sofia, had lunch at La Vaca Veronica(Moritan 38) and back to hotel in the same day

Madrid is very compact and easy to walk. They also have an excellent bus system that can take you just about anywhere. A transit pass is good for both the bus and the metro.

I was watching an old movie last night, The Pleasure Seekers, with Ann Margaret, Carol Linley (sp?) and Pamela Tiffin -- all took place in the mid 60's in Madrid, and it was so neat seeing all the wonderful places we walked in Madrid, including that big round-about at the post office!
