Spain/Portugal or Turkey/Greece

My wife and I had planned our 3 week honeymoon to Turkey and Greek Islands departing last September but decided to postpone. We want to go this May, but someone suggested Spain and Portugal. Never been to any of the countries. What's better for a moderate budget? Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pammukale, Rhodes, and Santorini versus Lisbon, the Algarve, and Andalusia.

Paul, I have never been to Spain and Portugal, so I'd be interested to see the comments of people who have. However, I have been to Turkey, with a short side trip into Greece, and I found it very very reasonable. I travelled in April, but May would be just as good, and not too crowded. I found fantastic food at low prices, modest hotels for a fraction of what I'd pay for a motel room at home. And friendly wonderful people, and fantastic sights. So if you're on a moderate budget, I'd vote for Turkey and Greece. But perhaps others will be able to fill you in on Spain/Portugal.
Enjoy!

Hi Paul

I would stick with your original plans and do Turkey and the Greek Islands. Spain is great (I've not been to Portugal but know lots of people who have who say it is wonderful) - save it for another time.

Turkey is sensational and you will get much better value for your US$ there than Spain/Portugal. Spain used to be really cheap but not so much now. Turkey's tourism has suffered massively since 11 September and the value will be even better. We adored it - Cappadocia will be forever one of my travel highlights and Rhodes - wow what a place.

Paul:
Portugal is the best option. Sun, history, food, nice people, and the best poetr in the world.
Try the North of Portugal, go up the Douro River in a hotel-boat, and yo'll see why Porto wine is a UNESCO patrimony...

If you want to make our honeymoon really specail and unforgotable go Turkey and Cappadocia. We have found Gamirasu Cave Hotel on the web and thought we were very lucky. Staying in a cave room (with all the modern facilities like jacuzzi...)is great fun and the warmth of the people at the hotel adds to the value... You may find them at: www.gamirasu.com and e-mail: [email protected]
