Somewhere Nice Near Pescara in the Hills

We thought we were staying in a nice agriturismo with views over a valley south west of Pescara in Pescosansonesco. At least that is what the brochure implied and there were comments like "nice views from the room". We arrived and found that we have a room in an attic with one small porthole in the wall and skylight. Despite the fact that we are in a beautiful area, this not a good way to start a holiday in Abruzzo. We are looking for accomodation over the next three nights commencing tomorrow night. Does anybody know of a nice place that we should contact in the hills to the west or south west of Pescara ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hi Steve & Sue,

sorry to hear that your latest lodgings aren't stellar.

a bit of work on google maps found me this place south-east of Pescara:

http://www.locandadelvecchioborgo.it

good reviews on TA and booking.com but I'm not sure if they have got vacancies - the website wasn't telling.

good luck!

I have stayed at the Don Federico Inn in Moscufo. Very nice, though not fancy. Nice courtyard. It is a B&B and the owner is very nice. There is a lovely church across the street that is worth a visit. Short drive from Pescara.

Also stayed in this agriturismo near Penne. Beautiful views towards the mountains. Penne is a nice size town. They do offer dinner, in addition to breakfast. A bit more modern--not a quaint agriturismo but very nice. The owners and staff were wonderful.

Fortunately all has been resolved and happily so. From our side we were probably a little grumpy because of a poor experience staying at Hotel Bramante in Todi during the previous 3 nights. Bramante was a very run down 2.5 star with a nice pool pretending to be a 4 star.
IMHO. We haven't really had cause to complain about lodgings in Europe since a bizarre experience in 1992. Advice here on Fodors has been great over the years and we have also learned that it is very difficult to translate TripAdvisor ratings and views in recent years. Thank you Ann and mama_mia. We will report back here about our experience in Pescosansonesco.

Glad it has all been resolved to your satisfaction and sorry about Todi. The internet is a great resource but there are just a few times when it bites you on the bum, and this sounds like one of them.

looking forward to hearing about the rest of your trip.

Reporting back on our visit to Agriturismo Tenuta Testarossa at Pescosansonesco in the hills, 45 minutes to the west of Pescara. The Tenuta, at one of Pasetti Wines Estates, is beautifully presented in the online brochure.

On the positive side the views are wonderful throughout the property, very nice rooms generally in a beautifully restored 19th Century building with an excellent outdoor pool. In many ways reality meets the standard of the brochure.

However some of the rooms are in the attic and do not have views other than toward the sky through skylights. After a night in an attic room we were moved to a beautiful room overlooking the pool.

It is not so easy to locate the Tenuta by road and one of the roads leading to it is closed, which your GPS may not reveal

If you go there please first obtain detailed instructions. The last 300 metres into the Tenuta is on a relatively steep gravel road that is not too challenging, but at night it is not fun driving in and out of there.

There are a few nearby villages, but not too many restaurant options that we became aware of.

That leads most guests to eat at the Tenuta. Here I need to be somewhat critical.

The room rates for our stay in August was 120E B&B per night which we thought to be priced fairly.

We were told before we arrived "if you
want we offer some menus in our Tenuta at a low price meat, fish, vegetables, appetizers. We use only local and genuine products such as cheeses, vegetables, eggs and so on. Everything is prepared in our Tenuta."

So we decided not to venture out and eat at the Tenuta for each of four nights where we met some new friends. Generally the food was very good basic Italian food and each night we tried a different bottle of Pasetti wine, there being no others on offer.

Our Host Laura Pasetti, who does not speak English, was very enthusiastic, welcoming and entertaining. The restaurant at the Tenuta is her hobby and she captures the audience well.

However it was only when we checked out that we realised that we paid almost as much for dinner each night as for the accomodation. About 100E for two including wine and water.

We would recommend at least one evening at Laura's Restaurant at the Tenuta. If we had out 4 days over again we would have dined in one or two nights - depending what was on the menu, which is posted each afternoon near the entrance to the Tenuta.

While we there, Luana was on Reception and helped out elsewhere on the property. Luana, who previously worked with Alitalia, was delightful and very helpful throughout our stay.

We recommend the Tenuta as a good base for visiting the region from the Grand Sasso to the Sea, but it is important to be able to select a room with a view and also to have a choice of where and what to eat each night.

I personally know Laura and her daughter who has magnificent red hair - hence the name Testarossa for the tenuta and one of their wines.

Their wines are at the top end - Testarossa, Harimann etc - and have won numerous prizes so you meal price is very much governed by what you drank.
