Should we cancel?

My dh and i are scheduled to fly ewr to rome on sunday 8/13. This is our once a year trip without the 4 kids. We are spending 8 days in Positano. I have always said life goes on when we have traveled together but the thought of leaving the 4 kids behind has this time caused me true anxiety. We live in NJ and i am now thinking where can we go that does not require air travel. Does anyone feel as I do and what are you all doing?

My thought is flights are safest right after an incident - everyone will be especially on gaurd. I would not hesitate to go to Rome on Sunday personally. It would be such a shame to miss out on your vacation out of fear, when really - there are loads of flights going as we speak unhindered.

I wish you good travels etk401,

Murphy

I agree with Murphy... the few days after a big scare are likely the safest days to fly because everyone is on high alert.

Have a wonderful trip

etk- If you are really concerned, take separate flights. I have several friends who always do so.

A close friend of mine said he and his wife will never fly again after 9/11. No doubt some people will cancel because of the recent incident. This is exactly what these terrorists are hoping for. In fact I jokingly told my friend why not just write a check to Al Qaeda. No way are these gutless thugs going to dictate my vacations. Have a great time in Positano...

Relax. Fly to Rome together.

If you must worry ... You have a better chance of crashing your car on the way to the airport.

LOL murphy!
Guilty as charged! I've actually been working a ton of overtime at work lately so I've just been checking into Fodors every now and then for "sanity breaks". Hope to get back to my trip report this weekend if I can get a day away from the office.

Go, go, go! I am not sure why one should not go. Even without the added precautions (which probably make us no safer but tend to be reactions to give the appearence of doing something and making people feel safer) I would still not understand why one would not go. This coming froma father of two.

I will fly on September 12, and the only problem I can forsee is to stay hydrated... believe it or not, whatever water they give out, not enough for me! Depending on the length of the flight I need 1 to 3 additional bottles.

Just make sure you've checked in whatever they say you can't bring on board. Also go the the airport early.

It's not a safety issue now, it's an issue of possible delays - isn't it what we're normally worrying about?

Now, that the aiport personnel is on high alert, the flights will be safe. For a while.

Hi, etk. I agree with everyone else who has encouraged you to go on your trip as scheduled. But your question, 'does anyone feel as I do?' is a little trickier. I don't, personally, and it appears other posters so far don't feel that way, either, but none of that really matters. Only you can gauge your current anxiety level, & only you have a clue as to how you'll feel once en route. If you can picture yourself NOT having a good time, perhaps being anxiety-ridden the whole way, then it might make sense to reconsider. Were I in your shoes, I would go and plan on having a kick-ass time; but that's not the case. It's your trip, your family, your gut instincts. I would love to know that you'll be inspired by all our encouraging words, but ultimately, the 2 of you must follow your own hearts. Good luck with your decision, & keep us posted.

Have you stopped driving, climbing ladders, eating bad food, not exercising? Our lives are filled with real risks. We can't live our lives in fear.
