Short stay Rhine
Hi, I plan to be in Germany with my husband and 2 small children in Feb. for 5 days, plan to spend one nite in one of the cities along the Rhine, before heading towards Rothenburg. This is our first visit to Germany, we welcome any suggestions on which city along the Rhine is best to spend a nite at, have had some people recommend St Goar and Rudesheim, any info that helps us plan our visit is appreciated.

February is pretty bleak in the smaller towns along the Rhine - very little to see/do, many towns essentially shut. St. Goar is a very small place. Try Koblenz if you want a city, or if you want to try a somewhat smaller place, Boppard, just north of St. Goar, is an attractive town.
Another option might be to stay on the east bank of the Rhine; Marksburg Castle in the town of Braubach will be open for tours at that time (www.ricksteves.com/news/0211/rhine.htm), and you could either stay there, in Koblenz, or perhaps in the VERY attractive smaller (but not teeny) town of LInz, just north of Koblenz; go to this webpage and click on the red dots for a few shots of the town: www.linz.de/html/deutsch/stadt/ru-frame.htm

We liked our stay in St Goar (3 nights) last year. Boppard is bigger town. We didn't care for Rudesheim much, it's mostly a town to drink in on one small street. My favorite part of our 3 weeks in the Rhine area were the nights we stayed at the Schoenburg Castle hotel
which I very highly recommend to anyone.
