Any of the overnight services (FedEx, UPS, etc) are very likely to cost in the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I suspect that even shipping it 'standard' would cost at least $100 and take a loooong time. Customs clearance can also be a PITA, when you ship items.
Frankly, I think the cheapest and easiest option will be to just suck it up and pay the excess baggage charges.
When I had to ship a lot of items home to CA from Italy I put everything in a cardboard box and sent it via land through the Italian PO. It took about 60 or so days to arrive at my house. I didn't not ship the suitcase home as though it was a nice one it would have cost so much consequently it was not worth the money. Do you really need to ship the suitcases too, islandgirl? If not I imagine you would save a lot of money.
Luggage Ships to and from the US they charge around $18.00 a pound
Sounds like you flew Ryanair somewhere and didn't read the not-so fine print.
On regular airlines it is usually much cheaper just to pay an extra suitcase fee than ship. You must pay attention to weight limits though also. I hope you find a solution other than giving your clothes to a charity in Malta.

Which would be roughly $900 for a 50 lb suitcase.
After paying $1,800 in excess baggage for two large duffels from Manama to Amsterdam I still had to get them to Los Angeles. I used KLM air freight and saved a lot.
I have only sent one suitcase ahead in my life and that was many years ago. I also sent it air freight, which looks like is still the best way from spaarne's experience.
