Seiffen shopping?
We will be visiting Seiffen in early Dec. to visit the Christmas Market and workshops. I am trying to decide on train/bus times from Dresden. We will be spending one night at the Bruntes Haus. Can anyone give me some idea of what times the shops/workshops open and close during the Advent Season? Any recomendations for a good place for dinner?
On the way to Seiffen (from Dresden) we want to stop off for a few hours to visit Freiberg- what are top sites that we should visit? How much time should be allotted to get a good quick view of the city?
One final question--since there seems to be a lack of information about this area, does anyone have any good websites to suggest that cover these towns and the surrounding areas?]
Thanks in advance for your help!

ttt for Ingo to see...
Freiberg is well worth a full day. The No. 1 sight is of course the cathedral with the tulip pulpit and the sculptures of the paradise door. Stroll the lanes of the well preserved old town. The mining museum. Christmas market in Obermarkt. Then there is the new exhibition of minerals in Freudenstein palace, which I have not yet seen myself but it is big on my to-do-list for next time.

I am on a trip in Weimar right now and will respond when I am back, probably on Wednesday.
I have a page on Freiberg on Virtualtourist.com which is quite informative. Lists all the major sites, even transportation and restaurant tips. Quokka could give you the link or wait until I am back.

Thanks quokka and Ingo. I've gone thru all of the links and have gained a lot of useful info. I'm still going over bus/train schedules and trying to squeeze every minute out of the two days that we will have in the Erzberge area. I understand that the Christmas Market stalls close daily at 4 PM, but will the shops and workshops stay open later than that? We will be in Seiffen during the first week of Dec.

Hi all,
thanks to quokka for posting the links.
It is true that during the weekdays the stalls of the Christmas Market in Seiffen close at 4 pm. I personally don't find them particularly attractive, though, so that's no big loss. Btw, 4 pm is about the time the bus tours leave the small town, so afterward you will have your quiet and enjoy the town even more. The regular shops are open till 6 pm anyway.
As you will spend one night in Seiffen my recommendation would be to explore Freiberg in more depth that first day. It is a very beautiful town. Looks like you saw the tips on my VT page. If you leave Dresden by train or bus around 10 am you'll be in Freiberg about 10.30 or 11 am. See the Christmas Market there, definitely see the cathedral, the mining/city museum, stroll along the cobbled streets and do some (window) shopping there. I bet you won't be done with Freiberg earlier than 2 or 3 pm, including a lunch (or Bratwurst and Glühwein on the Christmas Market) or coffee/cake to warm up.
An option for transportation to Seiffen is Bus B leaving Freiberg Busbahnhof 2.15 pm to Zuger Straße, Brand-Erbisdorf arr. 2.34 pm and leaving from there 2.47 pm by Bus # 737, arriving Kurort Seiffen Mitte 3.54 pm. This way you could still do some shopping in Seiffen until 6 pm.
However, if you're not done with Freiberg by that time you could still take the Bus # 737 that leaves 4.42 pm from Busbahnhof and goes directly to Seiffen, arriving 5.56 pm at the stop Mitte.
Seiffen doesn't have any upscale restaurants. Buntes Haus has a pretty good restaurant that offers hearty local food, like most others. I personally liked the food at Nussknackerbaude, a ten minutes walk up the main street and then right on a hill. Somewhat closer to fine dining is the restaurant in the Hotel Wettiner Höhe, maybe a 10 - 15 minutes walk from your hotel.
I don't know when exactly you'll be in Seiffen, so have no tips on events - but make sure to watch out for events like "Hutzenabend" (which is a get-together, singing, eating, drinking, often in your hotel) and concerts in the church.

Ingo, thanks so much for the Seiffen info. I have been thinking along the same lines with you, get an ealy start to Freiberg in the morning and then take the 2:15 bus to Seiffen, giving us a couple of hours to look around, and then have most of the next day to really enjoy the town until we take a late afternoon bus/train on to Leipzig. You have been a great help!
