Scotland Accomodation Suggestions
Hi there! My mother-in-law and I are starting to plan a Scotland trip for next September. It will just be three of us and we are starting from scratch. Any suggestions on places to stay? We are planning a 10 day visit and are open to staying in different areas. We would love to find unique accomodations such as a cottage or small home. While we want to visit some tourist sites, our main goal is to get to know the local way of life. Help!

Mel

I think you definitely want to try for B&B accommodation, but you need to sort out your itinerary a bit first. I'm sure we'd help. Have a look at these sites meantime and come back with any further questions

www.holiday.scotland.net and

www.scotland-info.uk.co

One of my favorite places in the Highlands is the GlenMoriston Arms. Find them at www.lochness-glenmoriston.co.uk/ It is located near the western shore of Loch Ness, on the sothern 1/3 end. It used to be a coaching lodge - it has a small number of rooms and a wonderful pub/restaurant. I believe the restaurant is listed in the Taste of Scotland.

One place we want to get to is Plochton - north of the Kyles of Lochalsh (sp?). I have received recommendations for the Plochton Hotel but have never stayed there.

Search the internet - there are many wonderful places and in the Highlands, you can't go wrong with the incredible scenery.

When our family went to scotland, we stayed in 'self catering' cottage in Callendar - centrally located between Glasgow and Edingburgh. We stayed at the Leny Lodge. Self catering is only if you are staying saturday to saturday. They also have a very nice B&B in the Leny House. While many have said that Callendar is a 'tourist area', it is also a nice little town that we enjoyed

Lynedoch Place in Edinburgh...nice location, within walking distance of Thrifty Car Rental
The Grange Bed and Breakfast in Fort William...nice location to see Glencoe and Ben Nevis
Leny House Estate in Collander...THE BEST, again a nice location to see Stirling, St. Andrews (a day trip), William Wallace Monument and even Glasgow
Gruline Home Farm Bed and Breakfast on Mull...Excellent food...small and a nice location to hike and see the Puffins on the Treshnish Islands.
STAY AWAY FROM SKEABOST HOUSE HOTEL ON SKYE!!!! Not worth the money.
We stayed at the Eilean Iarmain on Sleet Peninsula. It is a very nice location but a little pricey for the room. The food is great and they have a nice pub. Great scenery. Easy access to the ferry to Mull.
