Scavi Tour not available?

Just received an e-mail regarding the scavi tour. It appears there is no room for the dates we have available-last week of May. I was curious if you know of any other way to see it. Are there companies that will take you, or is it strictly from the staff there. The later is what I am assuming, but thought I would check with the experts. Thanks.

Strictly from the staff of the Vatican Scavi office. The space is so tight that groups have to be pretty small, and they have to offer several languages, so the number of English speaking visitors they handle isn't very high -- may be only 100/day or less (just a guess, but it can't be many).

Some folks have hit it lucky by going to the office hoping to fill the spot of a no-show. Might be worth a try.

If unable to get a "space" available for the scavi tour, a great option would be going to the top of St Peters dome. No reservations needed and seeing the inside of the dome from the inside of the dome IS an experience, and seeing the floor from the inside of the dome is scary....(well for some of us). The trip from inside of the dome to the top of the dome is another experience and the exterior view of Rome from the walkway around the outside of the dome is beautiful and scary (well for some of us. LOL). The ticket area for going to the Dome is on the right side of St Peters as you are facing it. It is a lifetime memory, but take your camera with you anyway... Have a great time.

I also suggest showing up at the office to see if they have any last minute cancellation. It has worked for some people.
