Just in Paris over the weekend, and I marvel at how anyone would consider so trite a gesture -- made by so very many people -- an interesting way to honor their luv.
How many of the couples are still actually together, do you suppose?
(And another thing -- if you buy the lock on the spot from one of the many lock vendors, just how meaningful a gesture is this anyway?)
Yuck.

BigPuss, this is not a rehash , it's about two women trying to do something about it. The more people consider how bad this is the closer we come to change. Hopefully redesign the railings so no locks can be attached. I saw some on statues and other monuments. A truly juvenile thing to do.

While I agree the locks are disgraceful, at least they are concentrated in several distinct areas where they can be dealt with in some sort of organized manner; either by the authorities and/or outraged public opinion. The bigger problem is the worldwide explosion of graffiti. That excrement is EVERYWHERE, and nothing seems to slow its insidious defacement of our cities and monuments.
As obnoxious as those locks are, we are trying to cure a pimple while the body is being covered with scabsl

Can I be frank? I am very sentimental so I found the idea of this a bit touching in an abstract kind of way (ducks for cover).
However, I had never considered the consequences or really thought it through to be honest. So I'm glad conversations like this come up. It educates people like me who are not ignorant (possibly tasteless lol) but who maybe hadn't thought hard about this.

Is it worth planting the idea that it might just be a bloke's idea of a cheap way of getting round a girl who's really holding out for a ring..?
(Not, by the way, that I would suggest hanging around the Seine on the off-chance some passing local will offer you one they just happened to find and are convinced is yours....)
