Safety on the HIGH SEAS
Is cruising safe anymore? It seems you have a symbol of western wealth bobbing in the ocean, is this not a target? With the QE2 ready to set sail I wonder if the cruise industry is next on the terror list?

Apparently cruising is safe enough as that appears to be one of the few areas of travel that picked up and is almost back to pre-9/11 numbers.
As to the QE2 - WRONG! She's going into dry-dock.
It's the Queen Mary2 that is coming online, first sailing is Monday Jan 12.
As to terror activities - anything and/or anyone can be a terror target. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to fly, fly; if you want to cruise, cruise; and if you want to stay home, do that to!

QE2 will only be in dry dock in MAy..they are just changing her routes
The only thing I'd worry about on a cruise is some virus being passed around as has happened a lot lately , curtesy of some infected passengers or crew , not a terrorist!

I suppose cruising is as safe as any mode of vacation travel. However, Big Daddy terrorism would not be a new threat. Terrorists some years ago took over the Achille Lauro (?spelling) and killed an American passenger. It was after this atrocity that only passengers were allowed to board cruise ships, and preboarding screenings started.

Face it: 9/11 was a master stroke in terms of economic impact but in terms of volume, they would have done much better had they attacked a stadium holding the Super Bowl.
Attacking a foreign-flagged cruise vessel? Perhaps with another suicide type airliner so stay home if you feel that threatened or unsure. Me, I'll take my chances.

JonJon, i'm not refering to using a plane to slam into a ship, i'm quite sure if they take control of another plane they would use it against a symbolic landmark. I also know they have heightened security at ports and on ships,thereby trying to avert another Achille Laro incident. My concern is another USS Cole incident out at sea but with a more devastating impact.

A very eerie thing happened after I posted on this thread. After doing my daily chores I sat down to rest a bit and what did I come across while channel surfing? That's right the movie about the Achille Lauro hijacking. I think it was called "The Taking of the Achille Lauro." I felt like I had stepped into the Twilight Zone. Pretty strange huh?
