Rome restaurant for New Year's Eve

My husband and I will be in Rome on New Year's eve and would like to find a restaurant similar to one we ate at 12 years ago. We spent that New Year's eve at a small, very Roman restaurant, Paris, in the Trastevere and then walked back to our hotel after midnight. We'll be staying in an apartment near Piazza Venezia, so we're centrally located. We'd still like a walk (of no more than an hour) back to the apartment after dinner. While we can afford an expensive meal, that's not necessarily what we are looking for. We would prefer a small, quiet trattoria or enoteche, old or new approaches to Roman food, and great service. We don't need a menu; our Italian is good enough. Suggestions? (We just turned 60, and we've spent a fair amount time in Italy, but this will be only our second trip to Rome.)

I was there NY Eve 2004 and many places were opened but required a reservation. By the way - Rome is NUTS on NYE..don't expect to get much sleep.

Many restaurants are open on NYE, but you can count on needing a reservations, unless you want to eat early.

The Montevecchio in Piazza Montevecchio is actually pretty good. Got a good review in NY Times a few years back. If you look at the picture, our rental apartment is right next door. It is located maybe 100 meters from Piazza Navonna, going down Via Coronari. It can get a bit pricey on NYE, but the food is great.

We were in Rome this past NYE and there were loads of restaurants that were open. Most of them had set menus and many were really expensive. Because of the high cost and because my husband has a severe dairy allergy (and every menu had dairy on it), we opted to wander around, go to bars, and snack and not really have a plan. It worked out great for us! We had a fantasic NYE and ate like kings at about 5 different places - we'd have a drink and an appetizer and then check out somehting else! We were in an apartment near Piazza Navona so mostly stayed in that area and near Campo d'Fiori.

Have a great trip - we thought NYE was a great time to be in Rome. Leading up to it, we felt like there weren't too many tourists and the weather was great for wandering!

Here is where I'd want to go - we had our best Rome dinner there.

Also, an older review by NY Times (but the restaurant has been there quite awhile):

Just to be clear--you are asking for Roman cuisine, right? As opposed to a pan-Italian menu or food from another region of the country?

I've eaten twice at l’antica Trattoria La Scaletta degli artisti on via de Santa Maria dell’ Anima 56. My husband and I really enjoyed the easy going atmosphere and the incredible food.

Thanks for all the tips. I've been away from the computer and will start looking at the some of the suggestions. Ekscrunchy: yes, definitely Roman, not pan-Italian cuisine. We're still looking for that perfect combination of food and atmosphere: we've been in Rome on New Years, so we know it's a scene. That's why something quieter would suit us. After a 3-hour meal and a grappa, we'll be up for dodging the flying glass and firecrackers on the walk back to the apartment. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (By the way, we're new to the forum, but would be happy to share tips for Venice where we rent an apartment in January.)
