Rome Hotel
We are looking for 3 nights in Rome mid-June; we were really hoping to get into the Daphne but unfortunately they're booked! Any recommendations on a similar type of hotel? Of course, we are looking for something "centrally" located (at least within walking distance of some sights - Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps), and about 200E or less per night. Thanks!

That's because there ARE so many hotels that fit the bill. Start doing searches here and looking at www.venere.com where you can search by location and cost. Start making a list of interesting hotels and then look at the reviews on tripadvisor. you can also put specific hotel names in the search field on this page to see if anyone here has been there lately and has an up to date review.

Have you tried the Domus Julia/Hotel Julia? It fits your requirements. My daughter and I just returned from there, and I think it's a great value and nice little hotel.
The Domus Julia in Rome is the apartment annex to the Hotel Julia, so you check in and have breakfast buffet at the Hotel. It is a fine little place, in a great location, at a very reasonable price. It is close to the Spanish Steps. We had a twin-bed room, for my daughter and myself, which was large enough by European standards (and is pictured on their website quite accurately). We entered our room via a nice dining room/kitchen common area. There were two other units which shared that space, and I think they are larger apartments and might suit your family of four. Go to their website and book directly for the best rate, of course. They also offer a 13EUR shuttle from the airport, which is a big cost-savings. (Beware, though, that the shuttle driver was a bit of a creep. He dropped me off at the bottom of the hill, with all my luggage, telling me the hotel was just across the street. But it was really up the hill about a block on a very narrow cobblestoned street, and was quite unpleasant dragging my bags up that hill after my long flights from the U.S. So be aware if the driver pulls that trick on you. It's a one-way street coming down the hill, and I guess he was too lazy to circle around and drop me off in front like the taxi drivers did.)

Terrazza San Pietro is pretty out of the way for a relatively short (first-time?) trip to Rome.
There was recently a thread with a number of good, centrally located hotels mentioned at or below your budget. Have you tried any of these? See the post from bardo about halfway down the thread.

I just got back from Rome this week. My mom, sister and I stayed at Hotel Grifo the first leg of our trip and loved it. The employees were very nice and super helpful. The rooms aren't huge, but worked for us. We had a quad with access to a private terrace, which cost about 215 Euro. But, a triple was only, I think, 190. It's pretty close to the Colosseum.
We left Rome for a few days and came back for one more night before heading home. That night we stayed at Hotel Nerva, which we did not like very much. The room didn't seem that clean and the hotel staff was not very helpful. Maybe they were just having an off day, but our experience was not great.

Thanks for all the tips - we're still in the process of researching.. Is anyone familiar with the Alpi? It's listed here on Fodors & had good reviews - its seems like it's within walking distance of Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps - am I correct?

While in Rome a few days ago, we stayed at the Domus Julia as I posted above. But I picked up cards from these three hotels, which looked very nice:
La Lumiere di Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps), has rooftop dining, is in an old mansion on Condotti street. More expensive than our Hotel Julia, I'm sure. www.lalumieredipiazzadispagna.com.
Hotel Barberini, Via Rasella 3, a four-star just up the street from the Domus Julia, across from Barberini Palace and near the Spanish steps. [email protected]
Hotel Bramante, near the Vatican in the 'ancient urban neighborhood of Borgo Pio". www.hotelbramante.com.
Good luck. Rome must be booked up for Nune at this point.

Of course, I meant "booked up for June". The La Lumiere's website has a very attractive summer offering for singles and doubles, which would be great if still available for next month. It's 330EUR for a three-night stay, which is much less than we paid at Domus Julia.

I'm not familiar with Hotel Bramante, but Borgo Pio is right by the Vatican. However, it is a lot further away from all the other things you will want to see. Much better location would be near Piazza Navona, Pantheon or Campo de' Fiori.
