romantic stop between Nice and Paris

We have planned most of our May/June 2011 trip to France (with the help of many wonderful Fodors regulars), but we have 2 or 3 nights to go somewhere romantic and peaceful between Nice and Paris at the end of our trip before we leave. We will likely be taking rail, so something that is accessible by rail both from Nice and then on to Paris (CDG) would be ideal. We will have already visited Dijon, the Luberon and the Cote D'Azur at this point so will be looking for a smaller city or town, quiet and peaceful before our flight home. Any suggestions welcome. We love all activities, eating, cultural, outdoors. Thank you!!

Avignon? Aix-en-Provence? There are TGV stations in both towns.

We enjoyed Avignon. We also loved Roussillon but we drove there in a rental car.

These are good ideas, but we may visit them while in the Luberon for a week. Maybe something closer to Paris?? Thanks again.

My husband and I found Nice to be very romantic and lovely. We enjoyed the nightly walks at the Promenade.

Villefranche is just 10 minutes from Nice and looks like something from a movie set or fairy tale. My favorite hotel is the Welcome with balconies overlooking the quiet harbor. Search on line for photos!

We will be staying in Villefranche Sur Mer for a week, and I agree it looks wonderful and we can't wait to see it. But for that stay we will have another couple with us, so when we leave there, headed back towards Paris on our own, we thought rather than staying in Paris, we would pick somewhere within 2 hours by rail, but smaller. Thanks for any and all ideas.
