Rent Car
We talked with a couple from Holland telling them about our future trip to Europe. They told us that a lot of rental cars are stolen in Italy when they bear an out of country license plate such as Holland or Germany. Has anybody else heard this being a problem?

Car theft can be a problem anyplace, even in the good ol' USA. Use coomon sense when you park, especially for the night. Ask the hotel or Pension where your staying to recommend a safe place. Don't leave anything, including clothing, in the car where it can be seen. Make sure you have theft insurance
on your credit card, otherwise ask for it when you make your rental car booking. It is usually inexpensive if taken with CDW issurance and prepaid before you leave. Good Luck.

Car theft is a big problem in several parts of Europe. The rental companies adjust their rates dramatically based on the region. Some car rental companies prohibit you from taking the car to certain areas and those who do allow it will raise the price - by a lot, in the case of Eastern Europe, for example. Get all the details upfront from your rental company regarding the area where you will be driving, understand your liabilities, and as one comment above mentioned, take all the reasonable precautions. But have fun, because having a car will give you the freedom to go where you want and to see what you want!
