Recommendations for a quaint smaller town fairly nearby Munich airport?

We will be flying into Munich next month but want to leave the airport ASAP when we get there and go into a more rural area of Germany or Austria nearby. We will be renting a car at the airport and will beheading to Austria within a day or two from then. What would be a good rural quaint smallish town to head to within about an hours drive from the Munich airport? We won't want to drive far the first day after two long flights I'm sure. Does anyone know of a nice rural or small town fairly nearby the Munich airport area.....and how to get there by roads? Someone suggested Landshut to me...has anyone been there and if so what did they think?

Thanks for any help you can give us with this.

Hi Bridgett: I just made reservations at a place
that I found March's Travel & Leisure Magazine.
I wanted a place nearby to fly out of Munich June 4.
I did not want to go into the city on our way out.
Anyway, the name of the town is Aying. The name of
the place is Brauerei Gasthof Hotel Aying, Zornedinger Strabe 2, 85653 Aying. Tel. 0049 (0)8095-705 and Fax:0049(0)8095-2053. They told me
that they are about 45 minutes from the M.Airport. What is really neat is that this is also a brewery.
The article describes the town as "heart-meltingly pretty." It is a little on the expensive side, about
$136 Doubles/ 250 DM. But I want to leave my European vacation with the very last night to remember. Get the mag. and read the article, p.160.
There are also other German itiniraries. We also fly into Munich, but we arrrive at 8:00 a.m., so we
are heading to Salzburg. The Wolf they say is in the old town and a nice splurge for the location. We are paying about $105. Be sure to go to Hallstatt.
I haven't been, but they say it's the prettiest village in Europe on the edge of the lake with mountains all around. When do you leave? We leave April 22. Maybe we'll see ya!

I should tell you that this town is hard to find on most maps. It is located on the way toward Salzburg, however. I need to get specific directions myself. Look southeast of Munich. Also,
instead of candy on your pillow, they place two bottles of Ayinger beer next to the bed!

Bridget: There really isn't any choice. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, one of the most beautiful towns in the world, is about 50 miles south of Munich. It's surrounded by mountains and is worth a couple of days visit on its own. Easy to get to - just ask the car rental agent at the airport. Check with your travel agent for a hotel. From Garmisch it's a short drive to Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria, two more beautiful cities.

Thanks Lynn and Rod for your suggestions. I have been to Garmisch before and it is very nice...we enjoyed the trip by cog railroad and cable car to the top of the Zugspitze.
We leave April 30th Lynn.....thanks for the info on that Travel and Leisure article. I will have to order it from our library. I hope you have a wonderful trip yourself. And I'd love to hear other suggestions if others have them on this question. On AOL Getmany board folks suggested Erling as a nice nearby town but I know little about it.
