Purchasing Tickets on the Internet
I called an airline directly to purchase a ticket to Amsterdam and even with the same dates and times, I found the ticket cheaper on the internet. How is this and is their anything I can do if the rates go lower?

I've found that internet rates are sometimes cheaper, too. I've always figured it's because you are essentially doing the research and booking yourself, and therefore, the agent isn't having to do the work.<BR><BR>The same goes for hotel rooms sometimes, too. They call it an "internet special."<BR>

Having a human being sell you a ticket (even over the phone) is going the same way as having a human pump gas into your car and ring up the sale.<BR><BR>So, so often - - the fare buying your ticket over the internet is going to be cheaper. That's not to say that a travel agent will never be helpful - - in FINDING you a cheaper fare. The agent will still likely purchase that ticket on your behalf - - for a fee - - via computer.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>[email protected]<BR>

A few weks ago I spotted an internet special on the Continental web page Boston-London-$650-I called my agent who had been working on the trip and she said that she couldn't buy that ticket. I called Continental and they said $825-you could only get the $650 ticket on the internet. I bought it myself and two days later it was gone- all tickets back up to $850.My agent told me the airlines want as many people as possible to buy their tickets on the internet- cuts costs for them. However, last year I found a cheaper ticket to Seville by calling the airline directly- so you have to ask everywhere.

I travel about 75K miles a year. I ALWAYS puchase on line, as they have the best rates. And, if you find an even lower fare on line later, you can call the airline directly and they will issue you a travel voucher for the difference in amount. In my case, it happened twice- both with United, and I was able to combine the 2 vouchers and apply them toward my next ticket.Every airline is different, so I would call first, but this applies to the majors.
