Pompei

Hi,

I was just wondering whether or not it is worth staying overnight in Pompei?

My plan would be as follows:

Fly into Naples - get the train to Pompei - stay over - train to Rome (via Naples)

Are there restaurants and things in Pompei?

Thanks

Hi T,

You can do what you have planned, but why?

Pompeii is an easy daytrip from Naples. You could visit the Archaeological Museum and spend the night before heading for Rome.

There are actually some very nice restaurants in Pompeii. Most of the hotels are modern, so some tourists refuse to stay in them and bed down in "charming" hotels in Sorrento, but I think it is more important to get an early start if you want to see the vast site. (One of the biggest surprises -- and regrets -- of touristing in italy was not realizing how fascinating and LARGE Pompeii is. I instantly wished I'd planned to spend more time there, but I was locked into moving, on.)

So here is one place I've got bookmarked for my make-up trip to Pompeii. Read current Tripadvisor reviews. The hotel restaurant -- especially its pizzeria -- is often well reviewed, but double check on the rooms as always with current Tripadvisor reviews:

The museum in Napoli will hold luggage if you want to see it on your way, to or from. It is highly worthwhile.

We were in Pompeii 2 days ago. I had the good idea of buying the 3 days ticket for all the sites besides s Pompeii. They are mobs of people as I called them. Too many tours of people from several cruise ships from Sorrento, so get ready to try to see the ruins while you hear tour guides speaking over each other while guiding groups of 20+.

I was really disappointed about how crowded the place is and how disrespectful some tourists are. We were there for about 5 hours and got to see about 1/2 of it, just because is too difficult to see with so many tourist groups.

I'm in Sorrento and I can see daily cruise ships in the bay arriving for the night all to Pompeii.

From Naples you take the Circumvesuviana (3.40 euros) or the Train of Terror as I call it (rides extremely fast and it's old like a tinsel can train painted with graffiti all over) will take about 45 mins to get to Pompeii from Naples.

Thanks for all your replies.

The reason I was thinking of staying in Pompeii rather than going back and staying in Naples is because I have heard bad things about certain areas in Naples and wouldn't know where was safe to stay?

I would have liked to stay in Sorrento but not sure I want a 3.5 hour bus ride to Rome which is our next stop, I know its alot quicker to get there from Naples!

If anyone has any advice about this that would be great too!

Thanks

Roma Termini to Naples is a 1.5 hour ride not 3.5 hours (we took the fecciarossa) Ride was pleasant, train fast, in Naples you can take the Circumvesuviana (underground termini) or a boat ride to Sorrento taxi to the port from station, another hour, to Pompeii is shorter ride in Circ train.

Sorrento to Pompeii is about 15+ ? stations away in the Circumvesuviana train, Sorrento is much nicer to stay than Naples and if you can afford the extra hour I would prefer it over Naples, stay in downtown, not in Via Capo as us, we eat downtown every night, downtown is compacted and easy to get used to.

Ferries between towns take about 30 mins, Sorrento to Positano, Sorrento to Naples, Positano to Amalfi, Sorrento to Capri, etc.

Stay overnight in Pompei and take Trenitalia to Rome; the trip will take a little over two hours. Be aware that the Trenitalia station is not as close to the ruins as the Circumvesuviana one.

This article tells you how to avoid the worst crowds:
