Please help with trip to Umbria, Tuscany and Santa Margarita Liguria
We want to use ff miles in Sept. I have found flight on 9/10 to Pisa arriving at 1pm and home to CA on 9/23 from genoa. So that is 12days not including travel.
We have been to Tuscany staying at Locanda Amorosa in Singulana but have not seen everything so we are looking forward to returning. Thinking of using a different base but like a hotel similar to Locanda.
We have never been to Umbria so I thought it would be a good place to combine with Tuscany. We will have a car. I am not sure what town to base in.
I am thinking of ending trip in Santa Margarita for a few days as it is close to Genoa airport and we really like the town.
I have read a lot here but am not sure where to go first after arriving in Pisa.
Please give any suggestions to itinerary, towns to base in etc.
Thank you for any help.

Of course!
Get your car in Pisa and drive to the Val d' Orcia for 5 nites in South Tuscany. Two places I would suggest are the Palazzo del Capitano in San Quirico or Terre di Nano near Pienza. Both are great !
I would then drive to Umbria---my choices for best locations are Genius Loci outside Bevagna or Palazzo Bocci in Spello.
You pick the days here---I think 4 would be adequate.
Then drive to Liguria, perhaps stopping in Lucca for lunch.
SML is hard to beat, but also look at Camogli even closer to Genoa. Good luck.

while we very much enjoyed our rental outside Todi with its lovely views of the Umbrian countryside, I also really liked the area around Spello/Bevagna/Montefalco. With the exception of Orvieto, which I highly recommend, all of the places that we daytripped to were in this area.

Thank you so much for your help.
Bob, you were the one who had mentioned Locanda Amorosa the last time we went to Tuscany. Do you think that the two hotels you mentioned are similar in quality to the Locanda? I think I would like to stay in town so we could walk to restaurants, so would the San Q hotel be better for that?
Also we want to stay in SML as we really like that town. We have a 940 am flight on 9/23 . Do you think it will be okay to drive from SML drop off car etc the morning of our flight. We have never been to the genoa airport.
Thanks so much for your expert advice.

Not as nice as LA, but far better location.
The PdC in San Quirico is quite nice and is my favorite location to explore south Tuscany. It is the definitive small Tuscan village---the evening passagiata is perfect.
For a 0940 take off you will need to leave at 0600. I would make a trial run before to find the car return and check hours.

dac,
Another vote here for Palazzo Bocci in Spello. Lovely hotel (it's a real palazzo complete with frescos on the ceilings) and Spello, charming, beautiful, untouristed little town full of flowers and gorgeous views. Palazzo Bocci's restaurant Il Mulino, across the street, is excellent.
Easy to drive in/out and day trip to above mentioned towns, including Assisi.

What happens if you miss the flight in Genoa? In Italy I always favor staying the night before a flight in the city of departure. Too much can go wrong in Italy: strikes, traffic accidents, breakdowns. Genoa is an interesting place, worth at least one night. And there will be several ways to get to the airport -- if one fails.

Thanks for all the replies.
Mirmar, I was thinking the same thing since it is an early flight. The Sheraton at the airport is not available. Any suggestions for another hotel that would be in the area?
