Places to see in the midlands

I will be renting a house near Kilcolgan for a week in July (during the obligatory Galway Racing season) and would welcome suggestions for places to visit other than Galway and Mayo and the Burren.. I have not traveled much in the midlands or the east coast, so any suggestions re other venues in those areas would be of interest to me. I intend to spend a few nights somewhere in the southeast, after leaving the Galway area.
Thanks for any suggestions.

You might want to tag Ireland to get more responses - otherwise it's midlands where.

I'm baffled.

The Irish Midlands have a very precise boundary these days, since our European masters invented the potty Council of the Regions when they started running out of dunderheaded ways to offer new opportunities for stealing as much as possible from the British, Dutch and Germans.

Either you've got a Kilcolgan I've never heard of, or you're badly confused about geography.

The one I know is in Co Galway, which has been proudly in the West of Ireland at least since St Patrick got rid of the snakes. NEVER in the Midlands.

Do you know a Kilcolgan I don't?

My intention is to take some day/overnight trips from my base in Kilcolgan to places of interest in the surrounding counties.....primarily those east of Galway. Other than the Rock of Cashel and Newgrange(which I hope to visit), is there anything special in Offaly, Westmeath, Kildare etc ?

Near Kildare is the National Stud Farm which is worth a visit if you love horses. The Japanese garden there is very nice. I don't have a map on hand but if you are interested in monastic sites Clonmacnoise could be included.

well you learn something new every day. I used to run a business in Athlone. All I can say in its favour is the fishing is good.

I enjoyed going to Tullamore and the distillery, Athlone and Clonmcnoise are a good stop. Do see Newgrange.

The drive around Lough Derg is very nice. With Nenagh and its castle (tower) as a good place to stop for lunch - if you go counter-clockwise from Portumna.
More stops possible/feasible at Ballina/Killaloe and Mountshannon.
"ferryboat" from the latter to Holy Island.

Other possible destinations:
Birr - castle and demesne
Roscrea - castle and somewhat nice town
Dunamese rock / castle ruins near Portlaoise
