Picturesque French coastal towns near Barcelona

Doing inital planning so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. We are in Barcelona 8 1/2 days this July. I'm considering an in-town hotel for the 1st five days, and thought it would be nice to tour the countryside and get a taste of coastal towns within 3-hour driving distance of Barcelona. Can you suggest destinations? Is it advisable to visit the South of France for a change of pace or are there similar towns on the northeastern coast Spain with that fishing village ambience?

Costa Brava area is very picturesque with little town and villages. It is within 1.5-2 hours driving from Barcelona. We have been to a few and coming back this year to continue expoloration.

Look here for our travel noteshttp://burlaki.com/travelog/costa-brava/#more-275

Enjoy your trip!

The French coast is noticeably different from the Spanish, so yes, if you want a change of ambience, a trip into France would be a good idea. I would go right up the coast and visit Banyuls, Port-Vendres, Collioure....maybe up to Perpignan and Narbonne.

We lived in the Province of Tarragona, some 100 kms. South of Barcelona. A must do a tour around the wild Northern stretch of the Costa Brave aka Daliland. Visit the village of Cadaques, the former home of this famous artist, Figueres the county town with the Museu Dali. You'd do better to prebook.
Use the remaining time to drive South of BCN and visit Sitges, along the coastal road south to Tarragona and if you're inclined a visit to Port Aventura. Another worthwhile visit is the monastry Montserrat and the surrounding wine country. Leave France for another visit...have a great time

Thanks, Matroskin, StCirq, & annamariachierchia. I'll check out those places. Do you have hotel or B&B you'd recommend for any of these towns?

No problem!
Thank you for reading!

Travelog was created exactly for the purpose of helping other travelers the way they help us!

For Barcelona, if you want to visit Palace of Music, make reservations on-line or day-two prior the visit in the box office. We still regret we missed the chance to see it inside.
